C. MACKE Admiral Richard C. Macke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Macke, was born in Freeport, Illinois on January 4, 1938. He is a graduate of Kirkland High School, Kirkland, Illinois and of the U.S. Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in June 1960. He entered flight training at Pensacola, Florida in july 1960 and was designated a Naval Aviator in August 1961. He reported to VA-23 in Lemoore, California and flew A-4 Skyhavvks for the next four years accumulating over 200 arrested landings on USS MIDWAY ICV-411. Rear Admiral Macke entered Navy Test Pilot School in February 1965 and after graduation served in the Weapons System Test Directorate. There he participated in many projects and was Proj- ect Officer for the A-4 Shoehorn and the Navy Preliminary Evaluations and Board of Inspec- tion and Survey Trials for the A-7 aircraft. From January 1968 to january 1970, Rear Admi- ral Macke was attached to VA-27, flying the A-7A Corsair Il. He served there as Administra- tive Officer and completed two deployments in USS CONSTELLATIOPN ICV-641 flying more than 150 combat missions in Southeast Asia. Rear Admiral Macke reported to U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in February 1970. Where he graduated with distinction with a Master of Science Degree in Operations Re- search and Systems Analysis. While at Postgraduate School, he was selected for aviation squadron command. In March 1971, he reported to VA-66 at Cecil Field, Florida as Execu- tive Officer and later served as Commanding Officer of this A-7E squadron assigned to USS INDEPENDENCE ICV-621. He was next assigned tothe Navy Office of Legislative Affairs in the Pentagon in Janu- ary 1975, where he helped present the budget for Naval Aviation Programs to members of Congress and their staffs. Fol-lowing selection for and completion of nuclear propulsion train- ing, Rear Admiral Macke served from May 1979 to July 1981 as Executive Officer of USS NIMIT Z ICVN-681. -His tour in NIMITZ included a record-setting deployment to the Indian Ocean.
