REARIADMIRALI 1'rHoMAs D PAULSEN w- ' . Rear Admiral Thomas'D. Paulsen is a native of Bismarck, North Dakota, and a. 1960 graduate of the U.S. Navel' Academy. I I Q ' During his first eight years in the Navy, Rear Admiral Paulsen served in two Groton, Connecticut homeported submarines: USS CORPORAL ISS 3461 and USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT ISSBN 6001, completing division officer and department head assignments in each ship. I After earning ia masters 'degree in computer science at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in 1970, Rear Admiral Paulsen reported for duty as executive officer of the submarine USS SAILFISH ISS 7521, homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. His tour in SAILFISH was followed by duty on the staff of Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet where he served as a watch officer. , In 1973 Rear Admiral Paulsen reported for duty as executive officer of the guided mis- sile cruiser USS REEVES ICG 241 and in 1975, assumed command of the frigate USS WHIPPLE IFF 10621, also homeported in Pearl Harbor. Following his first command'tour,,Rear Admiral Paulsen reported for duty in 1977 as the Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare IASW1 Readiness Officer and Surface Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet, homebased in Yokosuka, japan. Following this tour, Rear Admiral Paulsen assumed duties as Director of the Professional Develop- ment Division at the Naval Academy from 1980-1983, - Returning to the Pacific in 1984, Rear Admiral Paulsen assumed command of the com- mand ship USS BLUE RIDGE ILCC 191, flagship of the Seventh Fleet commander. Fol- lowing this second command tour, he reported for duty in 1985 as executive assistant to the Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, in Norfolk,lVirginia. From June .1986 - May 1989, Rear Admiral Paulsen served as executive assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. During this latter assignment, he was selected for promotion to flag rank in December 1987., ' U - I Rear Admiral Paulsen is the recipient of the following awards and decorations: Legion of Merit Itwo awardsl , Meritorious Service Medal Itwo awards1, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Battle-iEfficiency,iRibbon' with four E's, Expeditionary Service Medal, National Defense Medal Vietnam Service 'Medal with two bronzestars,1Humanitarianf Ribbon with ,three bronzestars.
