YF.. ,--,.., In 1607, Captain Christopher Newport sailed across Hampton Roads, seeking a site at which to land his three-ship expedition in order to establish a permanent set- tlement in Virginia for 104 passen- gers. They finally settled in what was to become jamestown. The following year Captain john Smith sailed up the Elizabeth River and discovered an abundance of fir and pine trees, which would later form the basis for the shipbuilding industry. The combination of these abun- dant natural resources and the fact that Hampton Roads is one of the wotld's finest natural harbours nat- urally led it to become widely rec- ognized for the shipbuilding in- dustries which would develop. The area consequently developed a rep- utation for its proficiency in ship- building and its many skilled sea captains and sailors, a reputation that still holds true today. lt was this very reputation, however, which caused the British Navy to come to the area with the sole pur- pose of impressing seamen for their ships. While they were more often than not given permission by the colonial governors to do this, on many occasions the captains of these vessels took it upon them- selves to recruit without authorization.
