Through the use of pantomine, sign language, and crude Portuguese, it is easy to make yourself understood in Rio de Janeiro, as many AMERICAmen learned. The thumbs up sign and the word chow facilitates understanding, but asking a Brazilian for a date, and never being able to verbalize it, is an experience that knows no English translation. Getting lost on the buses, trying in vain to flag down an empty taxi, and nearly getting run over in the process, are all part of the Rio experience for many an adventuresome soul. On the decidedly positive side, anyone who looked down on the city from Corcovado at twilight will probably have to re-define the word vista .
