Shepherd ommandin iiieer Captain Shepherd assumed command of USS AMERICA on April 7,1972, following a previous assignment as the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations. Prior to that he was the Executive Assistant to the llice Chief of Naval Operations. He served in the Systems Analysis Division of OPNAV from March 1968 to july 1969. Before his Washington tour, Commander Shepherd commanded,Air Wing 16 aboard USS ORISKANY in Southeast Asia. Commander Shepherd was the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron 81 during two Mediterranean deployments in 1964 and 1966. Lieutenant Commander Shepherd served as a special analyst in the Chief of Naval Personnel's Officer Distribution Division in 1963 and 1964. From 1958 to 1962 Lieutenant Commander Shepherd was the Operations Officer and Executive Officer of Attack Squadron 22 and the Weapons Training Officer in Attack Squadron 125. During 1956 to 1958, Lieutenant Shepherd acted as Ground- Training and Maintenance Officer in the jet Transitional Unit at Olathe, Kansas. From 1954 to 1955, Lieutenant Shepherd was project pilot and instructor in Project Cutlass at Miramar, Calif., and Fleet Composite Squadron 3 at Moffett Field, Calif. Lieutenant fjunior grade! Shepherd was aboard USS BOXER QCV-213 in Fighter Squadron 151 during a Korean deployment in 1952 and 1953. Prior to 1952, Lieutenant fjuniorgradeb Shepherd served in several squadron assignments after graduating from flight training in November 1948. Captain Shepherd has been awarded the Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, six Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Legions of Merit, eight Air Medals and several campaign medals. , K He has been selected for promotion to Rear Admiral. A Captain Shepherd graduated from Western State College of Colorado and has-. g done graduate work at the University of Chicagoand George Washington University. Captain Shepherd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orin'A. Shepherd of Kansas'City,i1ifC Kansas.
