Russell, jr., a native of Charleston, Missouri, has commanded the USS AMERICA since November 2, 1970. Captain Russell entered the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in August 1943. In May 1945 he was designated a Naval Aviator, commissioned Ensign and then transferred from the Naval Reserve to the U. S. Navy in july 1946. After four months of operational training at the Naval Air Station, DeLand, F lorida, Captain Russell joined 'Fighting Bombing Squadron CVFBJ 97. R From january 1946 to January 1949, he served with VFB-18, Fighter Squadron CVFQ 8-A s and VF -72 before enrolling under the Five Term.Program at Iowa State College at Ames. In August 1950 he was assig to Composite 1 ned the Communications- Section until May 1962, after which he trained with Attack Squadron 122. In November of that year he transferred to VA-155 as Executive Officer and the following June assumed command of that squadron. From September 1964 to March 1965 he trained with Readiness Attack Carrier Air Wing TWELVE, then took command of Carrier Air Wing F OURTEEN deployed aboard the aircraft carrier RANGER as a unit of Task Force 77 engaged in combat operations in Southeast Asia. ' From March to August 1966 he served as 'a' member of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of' Staff Special Studies Group at Washington, D. C., after which he attended fthe- National War.
