Homer, the Greek poet of ancient times, wrote a story of Odysseus, or Ulysses, who wandered aimlessly in the Mediterranean for ten years after the fall of Troy. USS America also undertook a journey in the Mediter- ranean in the year 1971 but with a definite goal---to help promote and maintain peace in the world. Our Odyssey began in December 1970 when the America returned from Southeast Asia. It continued through the period in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard when long hours and hard work were utilized to prepare us for this journey. The men of America worked through the long and often tedious hours of sea trials and ORI, finally arriving in the Mediterranean where our journey began in earnest. We visited many lands, saw many beautiful sights, and met and made friends with hundreds of people. Behind all of this was our search for peace. HMI B.
