SCHOOL HISTORY Wlieii the first diplomas from Amarillo High School were awarded in 1895, the number of graduates was very small. Not until 1904 were there enough seniors to have graduation exercises. In that year, exer- cises were held for the five graduates, in the Bivins Building. From that time graduation took place in the Olympic theater, Polk Street at Seventh Avenue, until 1920 when the building burned. For the following three years commencement exercises were held in those churches whose pastors preached the commencement sermon. Since 1923, the Nlunicipal Audi- torium has been used. The Amarillo High School department was first located in the Iohnson Street School, builded in 1906. The enrollment rapidly increas- ed, and in 1910, the building now known as Central Iunior High School was erected and called Amarillo High School. Thirteen years later the Senior High School building was completed. Since its erection it has been enlarged to accommodate the ever increasing enrollment.
