SSS SS “If you have knowledge, let others light their candles at it.” Through the willing and patient instruction of the AC faculty, knowledge has been offered to many stu- bea ks ky Raat a dents. Because these instructors are dedicated to their profession, they have sought to give us not only knowledge, but also wisdom. Ever shall we be grateful for their counsel and their friendship. 6 Amarillo It is always a real pleasure to salute the student body and the ex-students of Amarillo College. The presentation of the yearbook is a particularly fitting occasion to do this. The Palo Duro is the end product of many hours of thought-planning and actual labor of many different people. This yearbook we believe to be a very fine product both in its aesthetic appeal and in the material covered. Congratulations to the staff and the sponsor. Those of you who examine its pages will gather much pleasure from the personalities and their activities shown therein. Many of these people will represent a small island of intimate friends of each of you. Their activi- ties may renew memories of the past wherein you took part in similar activities. As the years pass the records presented in this yearbook will become more and more precious to you. You may even develop a nostalgia for the old friends and places and even for a few of your favorite professors. For those of you who are now in college this yearbook is in part your own record. My hope is that each of you has made a contribution to this composite cross section of life at Amarillo College. You will continue to make a record of one kind or another as you travel along the road of formal education or as you enter upon some gainful and socially useful occupation. My wish for each of you is for a good record, satis- fying to you as an individual and serviceable to others! LON Cle ace A. M. MEYER, PRESIDENT B. A., M. A., Indiana University Ph. COLLEGE The Cartermen got off to a good start with the speedy tricks of guard, Bobby Boyter, who tried to make a bas- ket although from the picture, it looks as if he missed. No. 99 tried his best to keep Bobby from making it. At the beginning of the game Jim Proctor jumped with No. 99 to control the tip-off. The Badgers barely made it with a score of 70-69. “Up they go.” Versus - GARDEN CITY Jim Proctor goes high as he jumps over a Garden City ? player in an attempt to make a basket. This Garden City man with the ball makes sure that he has a good hold on it and even keeps three of his own players around him to help guard the ball. Jim Proctor looks around just to see who does have the ball, We lost our first game with Garden City 42-52. “It's mine, Bub.” Versus DODGE CITY Dale Tarbet fights for the rebound from the reaching arms of three Dodge City players. Tarbet looks for the basket in an attempt to score two points for his team. Although No. 23 has a long way to go, he flies through the air far from the greatest of ease with two Dodge City players standing on each side of him. Bobby Boyter comes in to lend his help, if needed. It was a good game but we still lost . . . 50-65. 132 “But where is it, Dale? Versus PRATT JUNIOR COLLEGE Moe Eddleman has the ball in his hand but Put Powell, to the left, wonders how long he will be able to keep it. Lynn Hunt jumps high for the ball but it looks as if No. 53 of Pratt is doing a pretty good job of keeping it. Dale Tarbet jumps with No. 51 of Pratt but is at a disad- | vantage. Put Powell is ready to jump in case the ball : | should come his way. A very good game and the Badgers won 67-59. So Bl ete, “Get ‘em, Lynn.” “Let me have it.” 133 Versus HUTCHINSON Dale Tarbet, Robert Dixon, and No. 39 fight it out under the i basket to control the shot which No. 31 from Hutchinson is trying to make. Bobby Boyter stands under the basket hoping the ball will come his way. Robert Dixon and No. 39 try to control the rebound of Hut- chinson's basket. Lynn Hunt stands waiting for the ball | | to come down. Lynn goes under the basket for a lay-in as other members of both teams watch. | Final score: Badgers 71, Hutchinson 85. 134. “Jump, Dixon.” “Look out, Lynn!” Versi THE ALUMNI ! The Varsity ond Alumni game is always one to be enjoyed. The varsity usually wins as it did this year but the alumni make it quite a ball game, especially during the last 5 minutes. In this first picture there seems to be quite a crowded condition of alumni members with the exception of Dale Tarbet, a varsity member. In the second picture, Cordell Brown prepares to chalk up two more points for the varsity against the will of No. ; 40 on the alumni team. The game is played during Homecoming. The Varsity won by a score of 80-58. “Why not tackle him?” 135 Versus SAYRE JUNIOR COLLEGE( Cordell Brown, AC’s flashy guard, attempts to make a basket between two Sayre Yellowjackets. Cordell looks as if he might fall as he comes around No. 14 of the Yellowjackets. Coming in to help Cordell are Jim Proctor and Jerry Manning. As was found by many players who played against Cordell this year, unless you're pretty fast, he'll either run around you or run over you. The Badgers won with a score of 76-64. “Watch those knees.” 136 Versus CLARENDON JR. COLLEG No 11 of Clarendon jumps to control the rebound that Dale Tarbet missed on his free shot. Robert Dickson goes up to contest the rebound. This was the first conference | win for the Badgers. | Jim Proctor and Robert Dixon both go up to control a re- bound along with three Bulldogs.. _ Proctor goes high into the air to lay in two points for the Badgers. The Badgers won by a score of 69 to 59. 7 3 aa “Throw it, Dale.” Versus FRANK PHILLIPS Robert Dixon and Dale Tarbet fight to gain the rebound along with three Plainsmen. Dale Tarbet throws the ball to one of his teammates, who is coming in from outside the picture. Jim Proctor and No. 23 fight to see who can get the ball along with the able hands of one of the Plainsmen. Jerry Manning looks up to see if he might be of some help to his teammates. The Badgers won by a score of 68 to 66. “All hands.” i eS HOWARD COUNTY. Moe Eddleman watches as two Howard County players fight to control the ball. . Jim Proctor jumps high to control the tip-off that opened an exciting game, one of the best seen in AC gym this year. The Badgers beat the Jayhawks in an overtime ball game by a score of 70 to 68, with Bobby Boyter scoring the winning points in the last six seconds of the ball game with two free shots. “A very tense moment.” «iS ) Se {gDESSA “You should have been in front.” 140 Versus fe ODESSA JUNIOR COLLEGI Jim Proctor fights to get the rebound from Odessa’s Wayne Evans. James Dobbins, of Odessa, looks on to see if he can help. Jerry Manning and Jim Proctor and an unidentified Odessa player fight to keep the ball from going out of bounds. The Odessa team defeated the Badgers in both conference games. The second game by a score of 66 to Sl. “Let me have it, Jerry.” BASEBALT, 7 Because of a press deadline, this year’s baseball team could not be pictured, but the picture at the bottom of the page is the 1955-56 team which had a good year. There are high hopes for this year’s team to be made up mostly of freshmen. In the first picture, Herb Hill is at bat during a practice game. The second picture shows a “barely made it” landing. 141 Track Team Trains tor Season First row; left to right—Charles Jameson, Douglas Werner, Bob Pando, Roger Ray, Gary Gwenn, and Lelton Brown. Second row—Jim Bolenbach, Joe Williams, Mike Mills, 142 Royce Spence, Billy White, and Don Martin. fs JOE WILLIAMS, a returner from last year strikes a lovely pose, doesn't he? ROYCE SPENCE and BILLY WHITE are all set to break all known records. That’s a good idea, boys. Why n ot try it? With the co-operation of the coach, teammates, and photographers we were able to picture this year's track team. Although the season has not yet started, we may expect great events from every member of the team, which is made up of about half sophomores and half freshmen. ial ARCHERY | The first sport we played in gym : was archery, of which very few knew anything about at the be- ginning.: Some of the girls got ; | tired of spending all their valu- able time looking for lost ar- | rows and finally mastered the | sport. Of course, they were few , in number. a All the girls will remember the lovely days we spent on the archery range looking for lost ar- rows. Although we did not shoot them at the same time, we combined groups when searching for those shot into the air instead of into the target.
