VALEDICTORY A short tlme ago we, the class of 1960, marched upon tlus stage to the tradxtlonal ' Pomp and Crrcum stance to become the 25th graduatxng class of Amana Iilgh School As the fanulrar notes were heard and the tradrtlonal caps and gowns observed I m sure that there could be found a w1de var1ety of thoughts among all of us To our parents xt seemed like only yesterday when they watched us take our frrst step or heard us say our fnrst words, and now look upon us as young adults To our teachers we represented a fm ished product manufactured durmg the last twelve years whxch xs now ready to be put to the test. All our friends looked upon us as the future, yes, the future of a better oommumty, a stronger natlon, and a more peaceful world. We, the class of '60, realize all the faxth that IS be mg entrusted to us We know that we are endxng an important phase of our life on thls stage tomght. We are aware that after we leave here we wlll board our own mdlvxdual ship in sa11 down one of the twenty fxve seas that l1e before us at this time usmg know ledge as power and God as strength No one course w1l1 be smooth, we will all meet many challenges, obstacles and pleasures Even though none of us IS takmg the same shxp or sallmg the same sea we are all headed 1n the same general dlrection and lf we all do our best at steerlng our own shlp we can't help but umte rn the harbor of a better tomorrow We real 1ze that xf we are to accept the challenges overcome the obstacles and appreciate the pleasures that wxll make us a really great part of the future we must become better tndxviduals. One of the best ways to become a better mdxvxdual IS to set a goal Why not set a goal to be hke water Yes I sald water that sxmple compound known as H20 m Physlcs the word we recognlze as a noun rn Enghsh the llquxd which IS such a necesslty ln Home Eeonomlcs and the substances we know as a .defuute human need ln Bxology True water is all of these thmgs Yet xt IS so very much more Let us look at the very l1ttle thought of yet so favorable qualxtxes that water possesses Water never reslsts thlngs, yet it wears away the more resxstant thlngs Water f1ts itself to condxtxons, takxng the shape of whatever xt IS 1n Yet, what shapes more thmgs than wa er Water does work, but lt never appears busy, lt lets ltself be used Water has learned humllity It is colorless yet what IS a ra1nbow It is tasteless yet what better is there to dunk Water seeks low places, yet those from h1gh places come to dunk of It Oonsiderlng these qualltles we must admlt that It would be an honor as an Lndwldual to be l1ke water I'm sure that 1f we try and navlgate water's hldden quahtles as we sall down our own sea of l1fe we can't help but end up as a better Lndmvldual m a better oommumty a stronger nation and a more peaceful world makmg for a better tomornow Marxlyn Jean Baumgartel SALUTATURY God my shepherd walks besmde me, And I know I-hs way IS best God my shepherd walks beside me, I.n Hls love, I calmly rest I heard these lmes for the f1rst txme last Sunday in the Clucago Central Church where the Amana Semors were honored wxth spec1a1 Baccalaureate exerclses whlch I shall always remember I was so xmpressed wxth these lmes that I d hke to share thezr meamng wxth you tomght Whxther shall we walk As Semors, our walk to- gether has come to an end We separate, taking m dxvldual paths Yet our future paths lead to a walk wxth the commumty, our country and wlth ourselves What a pleasant pnvilege lt has been to grow up m Amana My heart goes out to each and every one of you who has made the C0!Il1'l'lU.!'l1ty what xt IS I thank you for the opp-ortumty bestowed upon us your young cxtlzens If not for you, we wlould ,not be here tonight Certamly above all our oommumty IS known for zts religious sect I feel most fortunate for thas her1tage and tradition of whxch we are a part I hope that we may carry to others as we go out mto the wsorld th1s bellef of slmpllclty and godlxness Wh1Ch we have been taught by sour elders Our forefathers settled thls community m a search for freedom freedom of rellglon and freedom of act1v1ty We are hexrs to thls freedom and as a result of thelr struggles we are free cxtxzens of the Umted States of Amerxca We owe our slncere and actlve patriotxsm to our country Recently President Elsenhower reported to the .na tion ' Informed cltlzens are the guardxan and spmt of democracy Though we took no part 1n fxghtmg for freedom we must fxght to keep It Our motto expresses our weapons Knowledge our Power God our Strength In walkxng with our country we must keep the Splflt of democracy ahve wxth our power and strength Wlth the world rn the sltuatlon It s today we know not what our future holds Yet I feel the Unlted States superxor to all athexstlc countrles for on our s1de we have the strength of God Now as lndxvrduals faclng our future alone we must learn to walk wlth ourselves We can do thls -only by acceptmg ourselves as we are We may reach true happmess only by recognlzmg our strengths weak nesses and our mner selves May we face the world wlth a humble Splflt ever ready to learn but fortxhed wlth courage and vxslon may we do 'our work to the best of our abxllty As we leave each other at the cnossroads we must walk by omselves T-o you fellow classmates I say thank you for your frlendshlp especxally I w1sh to include the Walford Sem-ors in sayxng that I am most happy that y-ou shared thls year wlth us To all of the Semors I wxsh the very best of luck and success Ln the future To all our teachers I say thank yvou Thank you for takmg the trouble to correct our m1stakes for your encouragement and unceasmg faxth You are truly the ones who made school worthwhile Alon! wxth the teachers go our ever gratefulness to y-ou our parents for vour guldance and love I have stated earller that IZYOWIHE up ln Amana has been a pleasant prwnlege Amana IS one of the few small oommun1t1es that IS world known Amana R frlgeratmon has been responsible for thls recogmtmn I thank the company and Mr Foerstner for the won derful trlp to Chlcaao and for the scholarshm As we say farewell mav we face the future eve dependent on our Shepherd and ln Hls love fmd rest peace and happiness Sally Ann Fels , u - - .. , . - . , ' as .. .
