Ed Kobayashi, 1121 quarterback, takes the ball to gain more yardage. Amaoon takes Gnanaoa The score was close, 26-20, but the Dons pretty well dominated the game. Rick Garabaldi and Dave Newton were Amador's leading ground gainers. The quarterback carried for 108 yards in 10 runs, while Newton picked up 89 yards in 15 carriers. Dave Kirth gain- ed 51 yards in 13 carriers. Ray Calija made the first TD and Dave Newton the second. Dave Haskell caught a pass from Rick Garibaldi for the 3rd. With this win the Amador team was looking forward to a first place. Granada 0 7 0 13--20 Amador 6 14 6 0--26 St. V mcent falls Although outdistanced in statistics, the Amador High School football team defeated St. Vincent 20-0 on the Don's field. The Dons broke a scoreless battle late in the second quarter after Brad Black intercepted a pass on the St. Vincent 44 and ran it back to 30. Ray Calija took a pitchout and scored. Calija also scored the next two TDS. The last seven points he made by run- ning back a point 61 yards, then booting home the extra point. Oons Beat JOhl1 Swett Behind a relentless running attack, Amador ground under a stubborn John Swett eleven by a 20-13 score. Most of the heavy running was done by Dave Newton, 97 yards in 16 carries, and Dave Kirth, 65 yards in 15 carries. Ray Calija made the first touchdown on a pass from Garibaldi. Dave New- ton made the second TD. Late in the 4th quarter Newton carried the kickoff back 20 yards to the Don's 44. On the first down play quarterback Garibaldi, took it into the end zone for the last Amador touchdown. John Swett O 0 6 7--13 Amador 0 6 0 14--20 Cons Stun Salesian In what will probably go down in the books as the biggest league upset of the 1965 season, Amador Don's pounded Salesian Chieftains 28-7. It was Ama- dor's game all the way, as they con- tained the Chieftains to their smallest score of the year. Due to his hard playing game, Ray Calija was named lpgj Q2 Week. He came through with two TD's on a run of 40 yards and a completed pass of 20 yards, with three conversion kicks and three in- tercepted passes. He also returned a kickoff 96 yards to the Salesian two to set up the third score by Rick Gari- baldi. The final score was made by Paul Line from the 13-yard line. Salesian 0 0 7 O-- 7 Amador 7 7 7 7--28 Quarterback Ed Kobayashi 1125 tries to avoid block- ers, going for the lst down. Rick Garibaldi picked up a punt on his 18- yard line and streaked 82 yards down the sidelines for thc Don's only TD. In the game's last minute and half, passes by Garibaldi for 7 yards and 15 yards, and a 24-yard run by the quar- terback, moved the Dons from their 20 to the Lion's 34. But a pass from Garibaldi was intercepted and moments later the final gun went off. Liberty 0 O 7 7--14 Amador 0 0 6 O-- 6 Amador tries to intercept puSS. Rick Garibaldi Ql9j down the sidelines for Amador's only TD. the Jmx Qemams A fumble set up the winning touchdown with 49 seconds left for Livermore. The game was certainly one of the most thrilling in the long rivalry between the two schools--despite being played in trying weather conditions. The game, played on a mud-sloshed field, was pri- marily dominated by the tough defensive squads of both teams. Amador scored early when Ray Calija streaked into the end zone from 40 yards out. At the end of the hali it looked like Amador could hold its own. Yet late in the last quarter the jinx appeared and fullback Dave Newton fumbled the ball on the Livermore eleven. The game was lost but Amador still took its position with two other schools for second place.
