O nAkhOD SAWAFI Bangkok Jim Krause AFS to Thailand, Summer ' 65 Walk together, talk together, O ye peoples of the earth, Then and only then shall ye have peace. This quote from ancient Sanskirt writings has been adopted by the American Field Service. It truly exemplifies the spirit of the foreign exchange program. During the 1965-66 program 1 , 145 Americans were sent abroad to further this ideal. My personal experience in Thailand was one I'1l never be able to forget. Maybe this is because I had a wonderful, loving family. I think that this is one of the most important aspects of the program. The Thais tried to understand my concepts and I tried to understand theirs, The bonds that were created during that summer are deeply rooted and could never be severed, Buddhism is ingrained in the Thai people so I felt it was necessary for me to learn of their religion. I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in Buddhism as an ordained monk. This experience gave me many invaluable lessons about life. This will probably be the last time that I will be able to formally thank the local AFS chapter. Without the hundreds of people working here at home my experience abroad would not have been possible.
