I A • i f T it Assemblies — 35 South Pacific highlights spring activities SOUTH PACIFIC, a musical originated by Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hamerstein II and Joshua Logan and based on a book by James A. Michener, concerns events in the life of Emilie de Becque, a middle-aged French planter farming a South Pacific island during World War II. When de Becque is entertaining a young American nurse, Nellie Forbush, at his country home . there is love, but Nellie is reluctant because of an age difference. The island is also the base for Seabees and Bloody Mary who is a friend to servicemen, providing anything for a price. Her competition is Luther Billis, a fast buck operator. To compete, he must get to Bali Ha'i, an off limits island. His only hope is Lt. Cable, a newly arrived officer who can get a boat. Cable is there to set up a spy outpost on a Japanese held island. On the island, Mary takes him to Liat, a young Polynesian girl, who is Mary's daughter. Back on the main island, Nellie is attending a party at Emile's. She is ready to give up her concern over their ages when she discovers Emile has been married to a Polynesian. Through the efforts of Emile and Lt. Cable, the Japanese are forced to evacuate the area, but the success costs Cable his life. Nellie realizes that nothing matters but her love for Emile. She returns to his house to care for his two children. The Allies move in to mop up the Japanese and Emile is rescued and returned to Nellie and his family. The production was a financial success playing to nearly 5,000. They volunteer their time which results in the fine schools we have today. Each, through their varied backgrounds and unending patience, help in many different ways to make everything fit into place as it should. Their pay? Self- satisfaction. The School Board members have worked dilegently on the planning of the new vocational courses to be installed at Altus High School. These courses include bookkeeping, health services, dental and medical office assistants and agriculture mechanics. These are the courses in which students have shown the most interest, according to a poll that was taken. By offering these courses, the Board has catered to the needs and wants of the students. These courses will enable students to be prepared for a life-time vocation. Johnson are always there with an open door, ready to help anyone who needs it. This year, the school is happy to welcome Coach Johnson to the counseling staff. The transactions of the students have changed this year, from previous years. The reason for this is so that students don't change counselors each time they advance from one grade to another. All students will have the same counselor from year to year, thus enableing them to become better acquainted. The counselors are very busy throughout the year in giving tests such as the ACT and PSAT to college bound students. Mrs. Bud Spruiell Mrs. Hulett Hooten Mrs. David Bryce Administration Diligent office aides help faculty Diligent office aides help to make the offices maintain a smooth operation. Continually on the move, office aides answer the telephones, pick up the tardy and absence slips, carry messages to classrooms, sort the mail, take care of student needs and keep a list of the lost and found articles. Teacher aides type tests, duplicate tests, check roll and do general errands for teachers. These duties free the teachers from some of the secretarial work. If a student works for a full year he can earn an activity credit. New and current books are bought during the year to keep the library up to date and supplied with the best materials possible for information and leisure reading. With the help of library aides the library is kept neat and the minimum number of books are misplaced or lost. SERVING AS full-time librarian is Mrs. Katherine Jordan. Cooks — 57 CLASSES Seniors are finally on the top That fighting spirit of the Senior Class of '76 is shown not only through the hard- fought battles on the sports field, but also within the souls of the Seniors members of Altus High. This year's homecoming events were scheduled earlier than usual. Seniors showed support by pushing to victory in the volkswagon race, winning blue and white day, and other activites to win Spirit Week. Graduation and Prom are probably the two most important dates in the life of a Senior. These were two moments that will always be cherished. We are now on our way to seek good fortune to make our lives prosperous. All the laughter, thrills, love and tears will be passed on and shared by the classes behind us. We will always remember and treasure the lucky dreams we all used to share. BOOSTING THE Senior section of the high school are the class officers and the Senior class sponsors. Their duties as class parents include making arrangements for the End-of-the- Year party, usually scheduled sometime between the Junior-Senior Banquet and the end of the school term. The senior parents also assist in making arrangements for the After Party, a function which follows the Junior-Senior Prom. They spend many hours gathering prizes for the games, decorating and planning refreshments. Senior Class — 77 Juniors live as middle men A junior is the middle man on the totem pole, having just one more year left of high school. The Junior Class prides itself on being the largest class ever to attend Altus High School. This year was the first time that the Juniors were only allowed one chance at raising the money for the traditional Junior-Senior Banquet. Although it looked at first as though the Juniors weren't going to make the minimum amount needed, the last day the money poured in and the banquet was saved! With a lot of blue paint and crepe paper and really putting their minds together, the Juniors won the hall decoration contest during Spirit Week. When the time comes to be Seniors we will realize that it is all passing by so quickly. We will also remember the good times and fun we have had as the middle man. There are so many new experiences in store. You can always tell which group of kids are the Sophomores because they are the only ones that stand in front of the bathroom and ask where it is, or maybe walk into a room full of Seniors on the first day of school. Also, they go through Clydes with their parents and after their bedtime! Some of the brightest ones get lost in the middle of the lunchroom. So as you can see being a Sophomore is really a million laughs. This year many friends have been made and those friendships are lasting ones. At the bottom of the ladder we have something to look forward to — climbing that ladder. As the year progresses and comes to an end the Sophomore class will be happy to welcome the next newcomers to AHS. Coach Cromartie has been head Coach of the Bulldog team for seven years. EXCITEMENT MOUNTS on the Bulldog sideline as they roll up the score to another triumphant victory. Starting on a low note with no where to go but up the Bulldogs closed the season on the top of the doghouse. Head Coach Jim Cromartie and his able assistants fielded the best ever team at the Altus High School. The season had its headaches but it also had the thrilling moments for coaches, players and spectators. From the very beginning the Bulldogs had the winning combination and went on to the quarter finals. AS THE game starts, (RIGHT) the Bulldgos know what they're up against but that doesn't stop them. Their goals were set high and even though their record has its flaws the Bulldogs fielded a mighty fine team this year. Rolling up the score once again for the Bulldogs is Bubba Starr 42. Altus hits quarter finals Breaking loose and running for a touchdown is senior quarterback Frank Bunting 15. AHS Destroys Duncan 38-6 The Altus High Bulldogs, parlaying a devastating offensive attack with a crushing defense, overpowered helpless Duncan 38-6 at Hightower Memorial Stadium in the season opener for both teams. Altus' offense scored on five of eight possessions in the game, scoring all four times it got the ball in the second half. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs' new-name defense was stiffer than a board, limiting Duncan to 122 yards total offense, 65 by rushing and 57 passing. Altus unleashed a fleet brace of backs, 10 altogether, that jolted the proud Demon defense for 426 yards rushing. Bulldogs Tame Vernon Lions 19-18. The Altus-Vernon football game looked a little like a baseball doubleheader, with Altus winning the first game before Vernon bounced back to take the second contest. The highly-ranked Altus Bulldogs jumped to a 19-6 advantage before intermission, then had to hold on for dear life to shun a second half rally by the stubborn Lions and escape back across theRed River with a har- fought 19-18 victory. The triumph upped Altus' season ledger to 2-0. The Bulldogs, who had 188 yards rushing and 43 passing and nine first downs in the first half with their devastating attack, went flat in the 170 — Football second half, mustering only 58 yards total offense and just two first downs. Altus appeared to have things going its way throughout the first half. The Bulldogs took only three plays on their first possession to move 59 yards for a touchdown. Vernon must not have liked the taste of being dominated. The stubborn Lions came out for the second half ready to play and the tide of the game took an abrupt turn in favor of Vernon. It quickly became obvious that whatever it was the Lions lacked in the first half, they were going to make up for in the second half. Bulldogs Clobber Clinton 34-0 The Altus Bulldogs, who must have realized at intermission that they were on the brink of an upset of major proportions, exploded for 34 points in the second half to turn back stubborn Clinton, 34-0 at Hightower Memorial Stadium. The No. 3-ranked Red Tornadoes of Class 2A came to Altus ready to play, and were surprisingly locked in a scoreless stalemate with the Class 4A's No. 1-ranked Bulldogs. But that woke the sleeping giant, and Altus finally put it together after intermission. The Bulldogs scored every time they got the ball in the second half except when the clock ran out on Altus' final possession, and even then AHS was threatening to score again. Clinton never seriously threatened. The Red Tornadoes deepest penetration were to the Altus 35 and 36 late in the game but GREGG'S interception and another theft by BYRON PAUL stamped out those threats. The Bulldogs threatened to score Byran Paul No. 30 reaches for the stars as he attemps to catch a Bulldog pass. twice in the first half but failed to light the scoreboard. Coach Jim Cromartie's crew wasn't to be denied in the second half, however, as quarterback EDDY CARDER rolled 64 yards for a touchdown in only five plays the first time it got the ball. AHS Overpowers Shawnee — 25-7 With quarterback FRANK BUNTING pulling the trigger, the No. 1-ranked Altus Bulldogs suddenly exploded for two touchdowns to break open a scoreless deadlock in the second quarter and powered past Shawnee, 25-7, in a slam-bang Boomer Conference football opener here. The smooth-operating BUNTING who relieved starter EDDY CARDER in the second period, engineered four touchdown drives. The senior signal- caller scored himself on runs of two and 15 yards and completed three of four passes for 52 steps. Altus halfback RAYMOND PRINCE ripped through the Shawnee defense for a game-leding 95 yards and scored on a nine-yard burst. Bulldogs Maul Moore 26-3 Altus High's bending but unbreakable defense and opportunistic offense kept the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs unbeaten in five games with a 26-3 Boomer Conference victory over Moore. The Bulldogs' defense, led by ROB KING. MIKE REBER and BYRON PAUL, absorbed attack after attack from the upset-minded Lions, who drove to within the Altus 10-yard line on three occasions but failed to score a touchdown. Altus' quick — striking wishbone offense, always ready to capitalize on opponents' mistakes, cashed in on a pair of interceptions by cornerback BYRON PAUL converting them into a pair of touchdowns — and upped its Boomer record to 2-0. It masrked the first time in six years that the Bulldogs have jumped to a 5- 0 start. Bulldogs Subdue Ike 28-20 Altus, getting away from the mistakes that plagued it early, got its high- power offense in gear long enough in the second and third quarter to turn back stubborn Lawton Eisenhower, 28- 20, in a Boomer Conference game Friday night before a homecoming crowd at Hightower Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs got long touchdown runs of 20 and 67 yards from quarterback FRANK BUNTING in the second period, then collected halfback RAYMOND PRINCE in the third Boomer triumph. Altus Turns Back Stubborn Pats — 14-6 The Alius Bulldogs, parlaying a lightning-like offense and a crushing defense, turned back a strong Putnam City West crew, 14-6, in a hard- hitting Boomer Conference football slugfest here. Altus, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 4A, kept its unbeaten skein intact at 7-0 and remained one of only two unbeaten teams in the Boomer Conference, along with Norman which decked previously unbeaten Lawton, 14-7 at Lawton. Bulldogs Give Lawton Whipping — 43-6 Through the years, old rivals Altus and Lawton have had some great football games. But the last meeting between the two Boomer Conference schools was not one of them. Altus, with an explosive wishbone attack, and a hardnosed, big-play defense, scored the first four limes it got of the Wolverines at Hightower Memorial Stadium. A capacity crowd of approximately 5,000 saw the Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, score on the second play of the game RICK HOEHNE, Altus' warhorse fullback, bolted 51 yards for a touchdown the first time he touched the ball. EDDIE GRAHAM booted the extra point and Altus took a 7-0 lead with Dodging all tackles is Frank Bunting No. 15 as he heads for paydirt. Football — 171 only 46 seconds having elapsed in the game. After the LHS score. Altus roared 69 yards in six plays to make it 14-6. A 34-yard scamper by heady quarterback FRANK BUNTING, on a second and nine, ended at the Lawton 34. Nifty halfback RAYMOND PRINCE hit for seven and nine yards before halfback DON STARR took a pitch around the left side for 11 yards to the Wolverine three-yard line. Then PRINCE barged over from two yards out. Norman nips AHS 15-8 Altus allowed offensive miscues to halt two scoring dives i the first half and another in the second before finally hitting paydirt. With the Bulldogs trailing 15-0 midway in the fourth period, Eddie Carder, who turned in a very commendable job at cornerback for the Bulldogs, replaced FRANK BUNTING at quarterback. CARDER ignited the Bulldogs by engineering a 57-yard, 10-play scoring march that had been set up by DAVE HARRIGAN'S recovery of a Norman fumble at the Tiger 43. Fullback RICK HOEHNE, the real workhorse on the drive, put Altus on the scoreboard on a three-yard run with 4:02 left to play. Halfback DON STARR took a pitch from CARDER and raced around the left end for the tw-point conversion and Altus had sliced the Tiger margin to 15 -8. Tulsa Upends Altus 36-16 Altus, which went into the game with an 8-1 mark and ranked number 4, finished its season with a fine 8-2 ledger. Altus finally began to show signs of life. Quarterback FRANK BUNTING hit tight end RICK LEATH with a 13-yard pass and halfback DON STARR raced 10 yards for another first down to the Hale 43. Lead by fullback RICK HOEHNE who gathered in 73 yards on 10 carries. Altus scored twice in the fourth quarter against Hale's reserves. BUNTING went 5 for 13 passing and gained 44 yards on 5 carries to aid in leading the attack for the Bulldogs. OUT FOR a long pass is Byron Paul to score a good play. ESCAPING FROM a near tackle is quarterback Frank Bunting. GOING FOR some extra yards is Bryon Paul in the Great Bulldog defense. 172 —Football Walstad makes South All-State first team Mr. Bob Wenk is currently the athletic director at AHS. His daily routine entails planning schedules for all sports events, providing transportation to and from meets for school players and providing the publicity necessary for school and community support. joe Walstad has been selected this year to play on the South All-State team. He was also selected by the Oklahoma high school coaches and the Jim Thorpe Award Committee as one of the eight outstanding football players for the 1975 season. Joe has been a starter for three years at Altus High. He has been starting as both offensive and defenseive tackle this season. We are very pleased for Joe. He has given a lot of effort and time and this is just one small way to recognize an outstanding individual in a team sport. said Coach Cromartie. Since pioneer days Altus High School has had a girl's basketball team. The 14 girls on the team work hard to present to the student body and to the public their best playing. Far from being the usual idea of a girl excelling in athletics, each player must be a good student and wish to work in a team in order to remain on the athletic eligibility list. Many extra hours of practice must be put in to keep the team in shape, but the girls are always ready to work more if it is needed to improve their game.
