Difference according to Altus High is people and ideals. A totally unique world was waiting to be discovered by this year's students. As unalike as we may seem it's true that each of us is here with the same goal in mind. We each wish to become useful citizens in a world where so much needs to be accomplished. We will one day go our separate ways and will set examples to each individual we contact. The knowledge we gain while students of Altus High will greatly benefit in our future years. Staff members learned to avoid mistakes by studying critiques of previous BULL- DOGS Future Journalists of America-31 GINGER TYREE, senior, was selected as editor of the 1973 Bulldog by Mrs. Susan Sifford. managing editor. Gin- ger attended the Oklahoma Interscho- lastic Press Associations yearbook seminar this past summer at the Un- iversity of Oklahoma in Norman. She is an outstanding Varsity Choir member and is a member of the All-State Chorus. She has been consistently listed on the honor roll and plans to attend the Un- iversity of Oklahoma after graduation. To remain a member of the Bulldog yearbook staff a stu- dent must have loyalty, integ- rity and above all courage. To publish a plus 200 page book each year requires much more time than is allowed dur- ing the school day therefore students are needed many times after school and on weekends. The end result of this extra time spent makes it all worth- while. Others on the staff besides Ginger Tyree, editor, are sec- tional editors Susan Ballew. Linda Scoggin. Cathy Logsdon. Debbie Dasbach and Jill Hooton. PIZZA AND YEARBOOK STAFF became synonymous this year. Many times after working late at night staff members finished the evening with pizza at the Pizza Hut. Enjoying the American-ltalian favorite at the staff school Christmas party are Glenna Jackson. Cathy Logsdon. Mary Hurst. Mary Anderson. Robin Frazier and Linda Scoggin. 32-Yearbook THERE S ONE in every group and the yearbook photographer. Glenn Myatt is no exception when it comes to clown- ing around. Glenn became very pro- ficient in the dark room. TO STAY ON the yearbook staff this year and really become involved, staff members just had to like pizza or starve! No one fell by the wayside and everyone enjoyed the Christ- mas party. There always seems to be lists of Small. Medium and Large, pepperoni. ham- burger. cheese and sausage on the bulletin board and the faithful number 482-4497. In picture one are Debbie Dasbach. Susan Ballew. Terri Neuman and Gerry Dameron who must have a cheese pizza. Cheryl Terry and Tonia Weber don't hisitate but Gail Privett. being a sophomore is a little more cautious. Yearbook-33 Collar keeps students informed Members of the Collar Staff uncover the latest scoop.'' With the leadership of their sponsor. Mrs. Susan Sifford. the reporters are taught to follow their noses for news. As any staff member can tell, there is more to gathering the news than following their noses. One must have the ability to find. who. what, where, when and why about his article. The Staff’s work is published free in THE COLLAR, supplement to the ALTUS TIMES-DEMOCRAT each Tuesday. Through class room and actual experi- ence and training, students receive a firm foundation of the background necessary to be jounalists and awake citizens. Busy at work is this year's editor of the Collar. Glenn Shaffer, as he double checks the layouts and copies for the weekly newspaper. Glenn s main duties involve working at the Times Democrat office. As news editor of the Collar. Vicki Doyel. proof reads layouts along with gathering all the local news of the school. Channel 2 enters third year Altus Cable Television. Channel 2, enrolled its largest staff in its three-year history. This allowed the instructional channel more mobility and many more games, events and activities of students were recorded on the station’s portable tape unit. Instructor. Mrs. Ruth Ferris, supervised broadcasting, pub- lished weekly schedules, and arranged program taping for the daily two hours of air time. In addition to the laboratory class. Mrs. Ferris taught a television production class each morning at 7:45 a.m. The production class learned the basics of writing a T.V. script and planning a show fortaping. The station was blessed with a drinking fountain and full- length mirror during the second semester. New microphones were purchased and carpeting was installed. Staff members were rotated in their assignments so that all facets of broadcasting could be experienced. Each crew held one- week positions in either equip- ment management or on-the- air broadcasting. NEIL SANDERS prepares to start taping, while director Donald Rice gives the cue to begin. Home Economics Related Occupations-55 Diligence and devotion result in All Students know that That Altus Band is the number one band in the state. But the hard work and preparation that these band members go through in order to be the best is often overlooked. Beginning in August, they prac- ticed during some of summer's hottest days, starting in the morn- ings and returning later in the evening to march until dark. They would then return the next morning to start again. During the month of November, the band attended the district marching contest in Lawton, sold fruit cakes, and participated in All-State district level band try-outs at Hobart. December turned out to be an exciting month with final All-State try-outs and the Christ- mas Parade on December 16. After Christmas break the band prepared music for a concert on January 21. They then attend- ed Oklahoma Music Educator's Association Honor Band Concert at Oklahoma City on January 27. Solo and ensemble contests at Weatherford headed the February agenda followed by the All School Production and district concert contest at Wea- therford. In the spring they participated in the state concert contest at Stillwater and left on May 4 for Canyon City, Colorado where they had previously received an invitation to participate in a marching contest held there. The one word to describe the band is superior, for this is the word used by many judges that judged the band during district and state contests. They not only work together but also each girl puts in many hours of practice time on her own. Each girl must take private lessons to learn basic fundamentals, tricks and routines of twirling before spring try-outs. As a group the twirlers attended a summer clinic. Other summer activities included practicing at morning and evening rehearsals with the band. The twirlers received six medals at district contest which was held at Cameron College. This number one rating enabled them to com- pete at the state contest level. Dedication is a good word to describe this year's twirlers. Their dedication and hard work proved rewarding when they were fea- tured at the first home game with Get It On by Chicago. The entire cast and directors were still receiving praise many weeks after the final curtain came down. For the first time in history five performances were given. Jan Gilmore had the lead role of Maria. She gave an outstanding performance both dramatically and musically. Captain Von Trapp was por- trayed by David Byram. During the course of the practice ses- sions David was able to elevate himself above the ages of the other cast members and become a very realistic father to the Von Trapp children. His most touch- ing performance was his singing of Edelweiss . Wren Hicks, who played the part of Mother Abbess of Nonn- berg Abbey brought tears to the eyes of nearly everyone when she sang “Climb Every Moun- tain” as the Von Trapp family was making its escape from the Nazi soldiers. A few of the objectives the faculty hopes to realize are developing a sense of ap- preciation for beauty, music and other cultural arts in each stpdent. The faculty strives to make possible the development of leadership potentials in- herent to democratic living and to im- partially commend and recognize each student. 3 AHS enjoys competent leadership Competent and abreast of the times, the Altus administrative staff works diligently to present both the gaining of knowledge and the adjustment to widening horizons as exciting challenges to a large and varied student body. Each individual is important and every new student is as much a part of the school as the student who was born and reared in Altus. The constantly growing student body, as well as the changing population, present a daily prob- lem which they successfully meet. AFTER SERVING the Altus schools system as its superintendent for 24 years. Mr. Clifford Peterson announced his resignation in January. Administration-95 A dedicated teacher and a beloved friend The following is one of Mrs. Peterson's favorite passages. Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and ab- surdities no doubt crept in; for- get them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day: begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. This day is all that is good and fair. It is too dear, with its hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on the yesterdays. -Emerson 96-In Memory Eula B. Peterson January 30. 1907-August 30. 1972 Directors guide school functions MR. The enthusiasm for classwork is shared with a friend; a lunch at noon is shared with a friend; a locker is shared with a friend. Friendships made at Altus High School are to be cherished a lifetime. friends A new breed graduates this year Everything was different. A sting of excitement was in the air. The feeling once deep inside was beginning to surface as the long awaited goal grew nearer. Finally the day came and every- one breathed a sigh of disbelief. Now they were the leaders, the ones carrying the torch; they were the seniors. Many surprising episodes were in store for the new breed of students. The same old rou- tine wasn't quite the same as be- fore. More important duties had to be fulfilled. ACT and SAT tests had to be taken by the college bound students. A special Sen- ior Night was held at the junior college to help prepare the up- coming college youths for the four years ahead. The worldly affairs played an important part in the life of a senior. With the voter's age lowered, many sen- iors were priviledged to partici- pate in the 1972 election of President of the United States. All this molded the world of a senior, but there was the excit- ing social life of the '73 sen- ior, too. After struggling through two years as underclassmen, it was finally time for the seniors to show what they were made of” by competing with the juniors and sophomores in events throughout the year. Memories were made of Homecoming, Sa- die Hawkins Day, Western Day and of course, graduation. Buck Zickler 147 Juniors find an hour makes a difference. Time. A junior never seems to have enough of the precious stuff. From the very beginning of the eleventh year the student discovers just how busy—and sometimes hectic—the year is going to be. Throughout the year an unbelievable amount of work is done by the juniors in preparation of the Jr.-Sr. Ban- quet. Candy sales, hamburger and chili suppers are only the beginning. Never ceasing hours of door to door selling becomes a second nature to the juniors. Besides the constant work and preparation of the banquet, the junior must concentrate on his school studies and grades. Early in the year he must decide on his senior schedule and begin making some vital decisions a- bout the next year. A prelimi- nary SAT is given to prepare the students for the college achieve- ment tests that they will take as seniors. Yes, the junior year is certain- ly one of the busiest years of high school life. It seems that the end will never come for these juniors who are so anxious to become seniors, but when the year as finally over there is the feeling that the end came all too soon.
