Champs The I956 football season was the most successful campaign in Altoona's history. The Ramblers met and conquered nine opponents to run their winning streak to ten. Five of these victories were in conference play to give Altoona undisputed Suburban Conference championship. The Ramblers ran up 2232 yards to their opponents 1293 yards and outscored them 217 points to 47. Because of their fine record Altoona was ranked I2th in the state at season's end. Highlights of the season were the Johnston, Ankeny, StoryCity, and Woodside games. Johnston came the closest to beating Altoona when they scored once and threatened to score again before time ran out as the Ramblers won I3-7. At Homecoming, Altoona downed arch rival Ankeny 21-0. The best offensive display of the season came as the Ramblers scored four times in the first I5 minutes and coasted to a 33-6 victory. Their highest point total was 40 points against Urbandale. The unbeaten season finished when twice beaten Saydel was swamped 33-0. Individual honors came to six regulars after the season. Roy Crabtree, Jan McLeIand, Frazier Coffie, Richard Den Otter, Carl West, and Dave Porter were placed on the first all conference team. Richard Den Otter earned 7th team All-State.
