Vocational JANET L. KIRCHNER ' Science In Each of Us Is a Part of The-mg A teacher is very much like a bygone year, that is, the teacher is a part of the past before he is truly appreciated. Nevertheless, it is that past that determirtes one's present, as well as one's future. lt was Alexander of Macedon who said, l am indebted to my father for my living, but to my teacher for living well, a tribute to Aristotle, one of the greatest teachers of all time. The high rating of Altoona High School has always been largely the result of an excellent teaching and administrative staff. In addition to teaching from a well planned curriculum, these teachers counsel students, confer with par- ents, sponsor clubs and classes, maintain grades, textbooks, and attendance records, attend PTA meetings, grade thousands of papers, chap- erone dances and parties, assist at athletic events, plays, and other school functions, organize and conduct field trips, take extra college courses to improve their professional ability, spend untold hours in preparation for classes, forever enter- tain the hope that they have inspired in each stu- dent the desire to know. With ministers, doctors, and social workers, they live and give a life of service.

The 119 teachers and administrators who constitute the Altoona High School faculty are organized with the Altoona High School Educa- tion Association, with Miss Elizabeth Holley as president, Miss Dorothy Richards as vice-presi- dent, Miss Beatrice Morrison as secretary, and Mr. Wilber Rung as treasurer. The group started the 1959-60 term with a picnic supper the first week of school at Riggles Gap and concluded it with a luncheon in June. March 16 was a holi- day for students while the teachers visited indus- tries and businesses all over Blair County to es- tablish a closer understanding with the users of their products, so to speak. In November our school underwent evaluation by an evaluating committee, and in addition to being given an ex- cellent rating, the school was congratulated on the respect and high esteem in which the teachers were held by the students. As for statistics, 64 men and 55 women com- prise the faculty. Two have doctor's degrees and 49 have master's degrees. The average teacher has twenty years of service, and the majority of his post graduate work has been done at Penn- sylvania State University. All in all, we students feel we are fortunate in having these men and women as our teachers, and each of us admits that they have played a considerable part in shaping our lives.
