Q Like every large organization, the tremen- dous size of the Altoona High School student body 12780 studentsl requires that the top man- agement be backed up in the iob of supervision by a team of vice-presidents which in AHS are our department heads. These assistants super- vise the teaching staff, help formulate the cur- riculum, order and distribute text books, assist in scheduling and discipline, and are responsible for department budgets. All of the subject de- partment heads teach at least two classes in addi- tion to carrying out their supervisory duties. In keeping with the school policy of rewarding merit, all of the subject teachers and the attend- ance and guidance personnel have risen from the ranks, so to speak, and have assumed depart- ment head status only after years of service as teachers in this school. Vocational JANET L. KIRCHNER ' Science In Each of Us Is a Part of The-mg A teacher is very much like a bygone year, that is, the teacher is a part of the past before he is truly appreciated. Nevertheless, it is that past that determirtes one's present, as well as one's future. lt was Alexander of Macedon who said, l am indebted to my father for my living, but to my teacher for living well, a tribute to Aristotle, one of the greatest teachers of all time. The high rating of Altoona High School has always been largely the result of an excellent teaching and administrative staff. In addition to teaching from a well planned curriculum, these teachers counsel students, confer with par- ents, sponsor clubs and classes, maintain grades, textbooks, and attendance records, attend PTA meetings, grade thousands of papers, chap- erone dances and parties, assist at athletic events, plays, and other school functions, organize and conduct field trips, take extra college courses to improve their professional ability, spend untold hours in preparation for classes, forever enter- tain the hope that they have inspired in each stu- dent the desire to know. With ministers, doctors, and social workers, they live and give a life of service.
