Mr. Joseph N. Maddocks Principal Principal That we have prospered as a nation is largely because an extraordinary number of gifted men have always guided the destinies of our people. Our founding fathers and makers of our Consti- tution were men of vision, empowered with wis- dom and courage, recognizing what was good enough yesterday is not good enough today. Abraham Lincoln expressed a truth that needs much emphasis today: YOU CANNOT STRENGTHEN THE WEAK BY WEAKENING THE STRONG. YOU CANNOT FURTHER THE BROTH- ERHOOD OF MAN BY TAKING AWAY MAN'S INI- TIATIVE AND INDEPENDENCE. YOU CANNOT HELP MEN PERMANENTLY BY DOING FOR THEM WHAT THEY COULD AND SHOULD DO FOR THEM- SELVES. With Lincoln's thought in mind, I hope the members of this class have acquired the indepen- dence, initiative, courage, and patriotic zeal to make a substantial contribution to the future wel- fare of our great nation. Congratulations and best wishes to every member of the Class of 1960. I Mr. Edgar J. Both the Conant report and the Rickover story have pointed up the need for top quality education if we are going to survive and retain our position of leadership among the na- tions of the World. Your education and the use you make of it will determine not only your suc- cess in tomorrow's world but also how this coun- try will fare in the future. Altoona has always furnished leaders and in- telligent followers. The Class of 1960 should be no exception. Good Luck to you.

DR. A. BRUCE DENNISTON Superintendent Superintendent The saddest of all obituaries might well be: His hidden talents were never discovered. It is not too late for you ot the Class of T960 to take a long searching look at yourselves. Do you see any evidence of an unknown or unused talent that you may possess? Have you developed the talents you do know about to their greatest po- tential? A certain sized bar of steel is worth 55.00. This same bar of steel is worth 510.50 it made into horseshoes. If made into needles it is worth S4285.00, but if made into balance wheels for watches it becomes worth S25,000. This can be said of another precious material-youth. Your value is determined by what you make of your- self. Edgar Guest put this truth into verse in his poem, Equipment. Figure it out for yourself, my lad, You've all that the greatest of men have had: Two arms, two hands, two legs, two eyes, And a brain to use if you would be wise. With this equipment they all began, So start for the top and say, I can.

Q Like every large organization, the tremen- dous size of the Altoona High School student body 12780 studentsl requires that the top man- agement be backed up in the iob of supervision by a team of vice-presidents which in AHS are our department heads. These assistants super- vise the teaching staff, help formulate the cur- riculum, order and distribute text books, assist in scheduling and discipline, and are responsible for department budgets. All of the subject de- partment heads teach at least two classes in addi- tion to carrying out their supervisory duties. In keeping with the school policy of rewarding merit, all of the subject teachers and the attend- ance and guidance personnel have risen from the ranks, so to speak, and have assumed depart- ment head status only after years of service as teachers in this school.
