Hound, of, ,fdur The duly elected members of the Board of School Directors of the School District of the city of Altoona, serving without remuneration, have a tremendous task before them. ln addition to upholding the state school laws, these public- spirited citizens administer a S4,473,066,000 budget, employ 509 professional employees and T80 non-professional employees, maintain 28 school buildings including one high school and two iunior high schools-all to provide an educa- tion for 12,088 students. This year Mr. Ernest DeJaiFfe, a former head of high school Mathematics Department, was elected president of the board. Much of the re- cent work of the board was concerned with the providing of fire stairways in schools in compli- ance with the new state building laws, the erec- tion of a new school to replace Irving School, and coping with the problems ofthe expanding school population. DR. A. BRUCE DENNISTON Superintendent Superintendent The saddest of all obituaries might well be: His hidden talents were never discovered. It is not too late for you ot the Class of T960 to take a long searching look at yourselves. Do you see any evidence of an unknown or unused talent that you may possess? Have you developed the talents you do know about to their greatest po- tential? A certain sized bar of steel is worth 55.00. This same bar of steel is worth 510.50 it made into horseshoes. If made into needles it is worth S4285.00, but if made into balance wheels for watches it becomes worth S25,000. This can be said of another precious material-youth. Your value is determined by what you make of your- self. Edgar Guest put this truth into verse in his poem, Equipment. Figure it out for yourself, my lad, You've all that the greatest of men have had: Two arms, two hands, two legs, two eyes, And a brain to use if you would be wise. With this equipment they all began, So start for the top and say, I can.
