Hound, of, ,fdur The duly elected members of the Board of School Directors of the School District of the city of Altoona, serving without remuneration, have a tremendous task before them. ln addition to upholding the state school laws, these public- spirited citizens administer a S4,473,066,000 budget, employ 509 professional employees and T80 non-professional employees, maintain 28 school buildings including one high school and two iunior high schools-all to provide an educa- tion for 12,088 students. This year Mr. Ernest DeJaiFfe, a former head of high school Mathematics Department, was elected president of the board. Much of the re- cent work of the board was concerned with the providing of fire stairways in schools in compli- ance with the new state building laws, the erec- tion of a new school to replace Irving School, and coping with the problems ofthe expanding school population.
