The Superintendent Graduation from high school marks a milestone in your life. As you go out to pursue your lives in fields of further education, in business, in indus- try, in marriage, in military service, or in what- ever occupation you choose, you will find that the things that are known as the old-fashioned virtues are the things that will provide for you a life of peace and hope. What are the old-fashioned virtues? They are the things that permit us to live in peace with ourselves and with other people, that provide rewards of a spiritual, moral, and material nature. They are such simple things as intellectual hon- esty, courtesy, courage, humility, common sense, hard work, ambition, loyalty to family, friends and country, orderly minds, the fulfillment of duty, consideration for other people -the Gold- en Rule-the Sermon on the Mount. All the progress made in the sciences, in the arts, in the techniques of business and industry, and in those things which provide a higher standard of ma- terial living can be mastered and enjoyed and profitably utilized only by those persons who practice the old-fashioned virtues.
