' ISTORY T Q X MQ B The Senior Class of 1950 had its beginnings back in 1939 when four of its members, Martin Thornburg, Bill Dugan, Layton Arnold, and Lorna Lea McClellan, started in the Alton Grade School Vernon Covert dropped back a year to join the class in the sixth grade and Bob Williams came to town from Blue Mound in his seventh grade The students other than the ones mentioned were Roberta Deichen, Betty King, Max Bates, Homer Grimes, Wendell Stanfield, Dean Kurtz, Larry Hadley, Harold Lea Morgison, and Lyle Stroup Enrolling for high school was an event all of eighth graders looked forward to with interest, yet with a sense of fear No longer were we children, were entering the adult world New Freshmen from the country joined us Don Thornburg breezed in from Fair West in his Chevy, Dwight Dugan blew in from Pleasant Valley on his motor scooter, and Mart Cooley from Mount Ayr wisely decided to stay in town fpossibly because he feared severe weather might prevent him from attending school if he had far to travel? Miss Brundgart was chosen class sponsor and Larry Hadley president the end of the year Larry and Darlene Lindgren moved to Osborne and Peggy Britt was married The Sophomore year began with Ben Johnston, Shirley Mayfield, and Edna Walker attending Alton High School for the first time They hailed from Wichita, Osborne, and Hill City respectively Eugene Blakesly attended part of the year, then moved to Natoma Mr Everett Yoxall was elected class sponsor and Bob Williams pres ident When school was out Lyle Stroup moved to Smith Center and Barbara Kurtz to Salina We Juniors welcomed Roberta Deichen who had spent her Freshman and Sophomore years in Smith Center Ben John ston finished the first semester with us and then moved to Wichita. Edna Walker took her Junior and Senior years together and graduated the following spring. Mrs. Hildreth was chosen sponsor and Martin Thornburg president. The Junior-Senior Banquet later proved these choices invaluable. Now, We the Seniors, stand at the threshold of grad- uation. We have Mr. Eugene Harnish as sponsor and Shirley Mayfield as president. Graduation characterizes maturity and responsibilities. Some of us will further our education, but for others this year marks the end of our formal education. Whatever the future holds for us, we sixteen realize we part company to fulfill our charge with destiny. But we will always fondly remember our classmates, our associates, and last but not least, our Alma Mater, Alton High School.
