Top left: who would suspect that a homely little, mechani- cal creature would win the hearts of movie goers around the world? Certainly not Steven Spielberg the creator — director of E.T. — the Extra Terrestrial. This film was not only the most successful film in history but also helped the film industry have the most successful season in nearly 40 years. Center: A small fire at the Alton Container Company on East Broadway erupted on Friday April 2, 1982. Due to the high flamability of the paper bales that were on fire and the very strong winds that whipped the area that day, a major conflagration began. The Alton Fire Department fought a fierce battle for three days to gain control of the fire. After it was over the Alton Container fire had been Alton’s largest and costliest fire. Bottom: A barge loaded with highly explosive benzine broke loose from a tow boat and lodged against the Alton Dam. The strong channel current pulled the barge under the water creating an extremely dangerous situation. Work- ers were able to prevent a major diaster by draining off the benzine before safely removing the barge. 1982 Grammy Awards TOTO 6 Grammys: Record of the year. Album of the year. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN Top Left: In the final days of the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, almost anything seemed worth trying — A chain-gang sit-in at the Illinois State house, Scene of Amendment Supporters last hope. Across the rotunda were pro-ERA fasters, growing thinner as the June 30th deadline approached, and an equally de- termined band of opponents. After the June 30th deadline the issue was dead and will be until the next century, when the issue will come up again.
