§K Ik Faculty 84 Organizations 210 kNUARN T. I XA MAN OF THE YEAR? Traditionally TIME’S Man of the Year covers have been real individuals or a symbolic representation of a group of people. Several human can- didates might have represented 1982, but none symbolized the past year richly or more significant than a ma- chine: the computer. “Goodbye, Farewell And Amen” M A S H The cast and crew of M A S H is shutting down the Korean War on tele- vision after 11 years. This means goodbye to one of the most popular television series of 11 time. M A S H has been in the Top 10 for nine out of its 11 years on CBS. It has won the Peabody and Humanitas awards, many Golden Globes, Peoples Choice awards, and 12 Emmys. On Monday night, February 29, 1983, M ' A’S ' H ended with its 251 st episode, which lasted two and one half hours. Across the nation Monday night there were many “farewell to M ' A ' S ' H bashes” held in bars, living rooms, restaurants, auditoriums, and hospitals which simu- lated a mobile Army surgical hospital. M’A’S’H 1 Middle: The original cast of M ' A’S ' H. First row: Larry Linville (Major Frank Burns), Loretta Swit (Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan), Alan Alda (Capt. Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce), Wayne Rodgers (Trapper John), Gary Burhoff (Corp. Radar O’Reilley), Jamie Farr (Corporal Maxwell Klinger). Second Row: McLean Stevenson (Lt. Col. Henry Blake), Wil- liam Christopher (Father John Mulcahy). M ' A ' S ' H 2 Bottom: The newest members of M A S H. Mike Farrell (Capt. B.J. Hunnicut), David Ogden Stiers (Major Charles Emerson Winchester), and Harry Morgan (Col. Sherman Potter). MACHINE, WEAR he Computer Moves In 2 Top left: who would suspect that a homely little, mechani- cal creature would win the hearts of movie goers around the world? Certainly not Steven Spielberg the creator — director of E.T. — the Extra Terrestrial. This film was not only the most successful film in history but also helped the film industry have the most successful season in nearly 40 years. Center: A small fire at the Alton Container Company on East Broadway erupted on Friday April 2, 1982. Due to the high flamability of the paper bales that were on fire and the very strong winds that whipped the area that day, a major conflagration began. The Alton Fire Department fought a fierce battle for three days to gain control of the fire. After it was over the Alton Container fire had been Alton’s largest and costliest fire. Bottom: A barge loaded with highly explosive benzine broke loose from a tow boat and lodged against the Alton Dam. The strong channel current pulled the barge under the water creating an extremely dangerous situation. Work- ers were able to prevent a major diaster by draining off the benzine before safely removing the barge. 1982 Grammy Awards TOTO 6 Grammys: Record of the year. Album of the year. Across the rotunda were pro-ERA fasters, growing thinner as the June 30th deadline approached, and an equally de- termined band of opponents. After the June 30th deadline the issue was dead and will be until the next century, when the issue will come up again. Top Right: Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) Tennesee Williams was Americas greatest playwright, with the possible exception of Eu- gene O ' Neill. Known as the laureate of the out- cast, Tennessee gave the world such plays as Orpheus Descending; A Streetcar Names De- sire, A Glass Menagerie, Summer and Smoke, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Sweet Bird of Youth, Suddenly Last Summer, and the Night of the Uguana. Tennessee Williams moved to St. Louis at the age of seven. His body is now buried there. teaching, one tends to look backward. I don’t really know what to say. Perhaps this poem says it best.” — Lynell Weaver The Teacher Muses Year after year they come to me These children with questioning looks. Year after year they leave me, As they leave their outgrown books. And I wonder sometimes if I taught them Just some of the worthwhile things, Just some of the things they’ll need in life. Be they peasants, or poets, or kings. Of course they’ve learned civics and history, and how to divide and add, But have they learned that these are not all That make life sad or glad? Have I taught them the cause of smiling When things are at their worst? Have I taught them there’s nothing that helps like a song When the heart seems ready to burst? Have I taught them the joy of clean living That Honor is better than Fame? That good friends are the best of Treasures Wealth, less than an untarnished name? Have I taught them that Fear is a coward Protection to those that are weak; That Silence always is golden When Gossip bids them speak? Have I taught them that Doubt is a coward Who is beaten when they say, “I can. That Courtesy ranks with Courage In the heart of the real Gentleman? Have I taught them these things and the others That will make them brave, kind and true? If I have, then I care not if they tell me That Irkutsk is a town in Peru. R. J. Andri is the son of Mrs. Geraldine Gipson. Twenty-three excellent graphic designs were presented to the Mayor, making his decision difficult. He selected Andri’s because of it’s in- dustrial implication. Standing in the photo are Mr. Dale Liven- good, Andri Cooley, and Mayor Lenz. 102 — Awards Amy Conrady, formally known as “Madison County’s Junior Miss’’, won the title “Illinois Junior Miss 1983” in the state competition on Jan. 23 in Chicago.
