The Redbirds scored first with a 6 yard touchdown by Mark Mottaz. He also kicked the extra-point for a 7-0 lead. Terre Haute came back to tie it up in the second quarter. On the following kickoff, Ron Meyers dashed 78 yards for a touchdown, but a penalty nullified the play. There was no more scoring the rest of the way, un- til the last play of the game. Terre Haute kicked a 26 yard field goal to win a dramatic 10-7 victory. The following Saturday, a very tough Quincy team came to Alton. Behind 7-0 the Redbirds came out and put up six points on a 8 yard pass by quarterback Jim Roberts to Randy Dick. The snap for the extra point was hobbled, therefore leav- ing the Redbirds trailing 7-6. The Redbirds , very determined to pull it out, were stopped by an interception late in the game, killing any chances of victory. Defensive end, Joel Dick, and linebacker, Mark Mormino, played superbly on defense. Both made numerous tackles throughout the game. Traveling to Cahokia proved to be quite enjoyable for the Redbirds . The offense exploded for 40 points while the defense recorded a shutout in collecting seven fumbles and three interceptions. It was a team effort. The defense set up five of the six touchdowns. Defensive tackles Tony Walker and Rodney Gillson each played a great game. Both recovered two fumbles. Jim Roberts passed for three touchdowns and scored one himself. The highly potent Edwardsville offense, averaging 36.6 points per game, came to Alton to test the selfish Redbird defense which had only allowed 17 points in the first three games. Edwardsville jumped out in front with a 14 point first quarter. But the Redbirds came back with 14 points in the second quarter on a 50 yard run by Lindsay Jungers and a 3 yard sneak by Roberts, Edwardsville scored six more points just before the half to lead 20-14. The Redbirds , very confident of open- ing up the game in the second half with their passing attack, were grounded. A tremendous rain storm kept either team from doing much. Edwardsville added safety to their score to win 22-14. Collinsville was not very hospitable as they shutout the Redbirds offense and took advantage of a few mistakes to win 14-0. The defense played their usual strong game but the poor field position the offense gave them limited their effec- tiveness. Homecoming was next and the Belleville East Lancers were to be the Redbirds foes. Belleville got on the scoreboard first after stopping an impressive Redbird drive. With four minutes left in the half, Rodney Gillson batted a pass into the air which fell into the hands of Mark Mormino. Mormino raced 67 yards untouched for the score. Roberts added the two point conversion for a 8-7 lead. But Belleville took the kickoff and in just ten plays scored again to lead at the half, 14-8. The se- cond half was a struggle between both teams. But the Lancers put the game on ice with a fourth quarter touchdown to give them the win, 20-8. Row 6: Tom Buder, Tom Fields (managers). The Warriors of Granite City South were next in line. It was homecoming for the Warriors so they were fired up for their home crowd. They jumped out in front, 7-0, in the first minutes of the game. Later in the quarter, Mark Mottaz, behind a super charged offensive tackle, John Gillespie, went 31 yards to tie the game, 7-7. Gillespie threw three blocks on the TD run. The game became a battle between the defensive and special teams. Tim Martin, playing a great game, kept the Warriors in their own territory with booming punts all night. With five minutes left in the game, Granite City scored on a 26 yard pass. The defense, still giving an all out effort, blocked the extra-point. The offense took the ball right down the field on the right arm of Jim Roberts. With a little less than two minutes left, Roberts connected with Randy Dick for a 12 yard touchdown to tie the game, 13- 13. Mark Mottaz then kicked the extra-point which proved to be the winning point, 14-13. Coach Norm Iman praised the super protection the offensive line gave quarterback Roberts when he took to the air. The offensive line consists of: Chris Sutton, Pete Schweitzer, Dan Springman, Steve Trappy, and John Gillespie. The Flyers of East St. Louis, undefeated and perennial Southwestern Conference Champs, came to town and went back home with a 34-0 win. The Flyers” simply out played the Redbirds” in every aspect of the game. They are probably one of the best high school teams to play in Illinois history. The final quarter of the final game against Belleville West was the most exciting Losing 34-0, with eleven minutes left in the game, Roberts threw to Mottaz over the middle. Mottaz then squibbed the kickoff. Jim Gaspard recovered it giving the ball to the Redbirds . On the first play after the recovery, Roberts hit Mottaz again over the middle. Again Mottaz turned up the sideline for a touchdown— this time 50 yds. The ball exchanged hands a few times, then after a Belleville punt, Roberts connected two passes with Randy Dick. Roberts snuck over the goal line from four yards out. He then added the two-point conversion to make the score 34-20. With only five minutes left, Belleville regained its composure to score two more touchdowns to keep the game. The final score was 47-20. Fianl statistics show that quart erback Jim Roberts completed 80 passes for 1,089 yards which included 8 touchdown passes. Randy Dick was the leading receiver with 35 receptions for 504 yards. Leading ground gainer was Mark Mottaz with 341 yards. Defensively, Jeff Cairns had five interceptions for the year. Jerry Cates had four. Tony Walker recovered four fumbles. Also, Tony Walker and Mark Mormino were the leading tacklers. Although the Redbirds only had a season record of 2-7 and a conference record of 2-5, the Redbirds were in every game with the exception of the East St. Louis game. Head Coach, Norm Iman and his staff should be congratulated for keeping the spirit and moral of the team up during a frustrating season. Although Coach Iman ' s team did not have a winning record, he taught them a lot more than just how to play football. Assistant varsity coaches were Mr. Jack Martin, Mr. Reno Calcari , and Mr. Gary Labertew. Sophomore coaches were Mr. Felix Macias, Mr. Collis James, and Mr. Jim Arico. The other games were Belleville Altoff 72-54, Quincy 67-74, and Quincy CB 9T-59. I hey also played two games in the Carbondale Holiday Tournament, which were Herrin 84-59 and Normal 63-74. The ' 74-75 season was the second year for Coach McPherson as head coach. His first team ended 19-8 and at one time were ruled number two in the state. Also, his first year team captured the Carbondale Holiday Tourna- ment; the first time an Alton basketball team had done this. Coming back from that team were starters Justin Scheiter and Maurice Williams. Super- subs Kenny Ramsey, Mike Robinson, Mark Tyler, Tony Walker also returned. A group of talented juniors up from a very fine sophomore team added to the punch of the 74-75 Redbirds.” They included LeRoy Stampley, Gary Jeffries, Robert Hightower, Bill Lyons, Mike Killion, Charles Love, and Dale Schroeder. Another great year was turned in by our cross country team. The Redbirds ' captured all dual meets (6) except one, and ran away with victories in the Edwardsville and Belleville West In- vitationals. The Redbirds placed a 2nd and 3rd. AHS finished a highly respectable 7t h place. Mike Sawyer placed 6th in- dividually out of more than 300 runners. Edwardsville nipped the “Reabirds for first in the Southwestern Conference Meet. It was the first time Alton did not take first in the last five years. Alton held the District Meet this year, and the “Redbirds came away with first place. Casey Reinking lead the field while Mike Sawyer placed 3rd, Bob Eppel 4th. Alton then advanced to the Sectional at Jacksonville. Again, Alton came away with first place. Mike Sawyer took first this time, but Casey Reinking finished right behind him. Bob Eppel placed 5th. Winning the Sectional qualified the “Redbirds for the state meet in Peoria. Mike Sawyer, Casey Reinking, Bob Eppel, Doug White, Randy Adler, Braa Wigger, Mike Kinder, Dave Lambie, and Dennis Sharp all competed. AHS placed 10th this year Mike Sawyer placed 10th individually at Peoria. Soccer had been previously noted as a club. The first year of competition proved to be quite profitable for the Redbirds . An upset victory over an area power, Granite City North, (2-1) late in the season, plus a more than respectable first year won-lost record of 5-9-1, helped Alton gain the respect from other schools as a potential soccer power. The Redbirds improved steadily throughout the season. The upset victory over Granite City North and a near upset over highly touted Quincy (2-1) in the sub-sectional at Jacksonville showed the steady improvement of the Red- birds . Terry Gentelin was the leading goal scorer with six goals. He was followed by David Kayser with four. David Kayser led with five assists. In goalie stats Randy Fox recorded two shut-outs. Jack Schwarte led in goals against average — 1.75 goals per game. With four girls returning from the first year team (2-4) and very talented propects for this year, the Redwings posted a terrific 11-1 record. Then, the Redwings won the District Meet held at Alton quite han- dily and qualified six girls for the state tournament at Arlington Hts. They were Cathy Kreid and Jane Clark in singles competition. In doubles, the teams of Cathy Lauschke - Rhonda Sherman and Dana Powers - Terri Mason qualified. There were a lot of reasons why this years ' team was so good. The main one is probably that the Redwings were in much better condition than their opponents. But, also the team had many number one tennis players. In singles, Cathy Kreid posted a 11-4 record and she won the singles at the District Tournament. Jane Clark had a 13-3 record and she was runner-up to Kreid in the District. They were backed through the year by Jean Beardsmore 10-1 and Mary Schleper 7-3. The doubles team of Cathy Lauschke - Rhonda Sherman sported a 13-2 record plus winners in the doubles competition in the District. The Dana Powers - Terri Mason doubles team was 12-3 and were second to Lauschke - Sherman. Kim Frazier - Patty Streeper had 9-2 record while the doubles teams of Sally Godfrey - Nancy Murray and Nancy Lacke - Cary Tegtmeyer were 7-1 and 4-3. The Alton Golf Team finished second to Edwardsville in the Southwestern Conference. In the District Tournament, led by Senior R. J. Tolliver ' s 4th place finish and medalist winner. Senior Greg Lilley, Alton High set a district record for a team total (301) and took 1st place in the District Tourna- ment for the 4th consecutive year. Seniors Doug Burke and Larry Moylan shot a 71 and 72 respectively to lead Alton to a 3rd place finish in the Sectional Tournament. In the State Tournament, the Golf Team finished with a respectable 12th place. This was Coach Glen McPherson ' s last year as Alton Golf Coach. The TATLER Staff wishes to congratulate him for the success he enjoyed as Golf Coach. 212 Fall Golf The Illinois High School Association changed the golf season to the fall instead of the spring for the 74-75 school year. The Redbirds had a season record of 11 wins and 10 losses, and placed 4th in the Southwestern Conference. In the District Tournament at Wood River, the Redbirds finished 2nd out of 18 teams. Perry Kanturek placed 2nd in- dividually out of 112 golfers; he was also low medalist. Congratulations to Coach Larry Overath for having a good first year. And if that season was any indication of what will come in the future, other teams better not schedule Alton High! In the opening game for the “Redwings against Granite City North, senior Jerri Wilson and her run- ning mate, sophomore Barb Burke, with excellent ballhandling, defense and leading the fast-break, led the team to a smashing 64-28 win. These two girls, plus the rebounding of senior Kim Lucker and junior Kim Wheeler, the hustle and determination of the entire team, and the spirit from the bench enabled the “Redwings to have a fine 12-3 season. The B team ended 7-8. The Redwings varsity team scored 708 points for 50.6 points per game, while allowing 391 points for 28.0 points per game. The B Team scored 462 points for 33.0 points per game, giving 443 points for 31.6 points per game. Team captain Jerri Wilson led the team with 197 points while Barb Burke was close behind with 191. This was the first time any Alton tennis team has come close to winning a conference title. The Netbirds then tied Granite City South in the District Meet. A state ruling requires, in case of a tie, the team with the most individual qualifiers in the tournament be declared the winner. Since Alton did not have any qualifiers, the right to go to the State Tournament went to Granite City who had one qualifier. Alton ' s team was loaded with top-notch players. Senior Bob Blumfield was 11-4 in singles while juniors, Frank Millitelo and Roger Schleper, were 8-3 and 7-7 respec- tively. Baseball With 13 lettermen returning, plus a group of talented juniors coming up, the Redbirds were ready for another fine year. The Redbirds won 11 of their first 13 games and the Alton Invitational Tournament. The good start was due to the fireball pitching of the Big Three, Terry Green, Mark Pear- son, and Jay Wohnlich, plus the hitting of the starting nine and the super-subs coming off the bench. Continuing their winning ways, the Redbirds won the Southwestern Conference title with a 12-2 record. But the Redbirds season ended in the first-round of District play by Wood River with a 6-2 win over the Redbirds . The Redbirds overall record was 20-6. Editor ' s Message I was asked two years ago to become editor of this book. I now realize what a great opportunity this has been for me. This book has caught the image of high school life, the dances, the sports, the activities, the people. Through this book I have seen many sides of the high school and its students, and I am thankful for it. I hope that you, too, will find the memories of this year. Through the camera, these memories have been preserved, but it is up to you, the students, to give them value. Special thanks must be given to Tina Pyatt, my Co-Editor, who has really kept this staff busy. All members of the staff are to be commended for their hard work and sacrifices, and above all Mr. Dale Livengood must be recognized as the man who made the TATLER run. His dedication and experience have added greatly to the quality of this book. Our deepest thanks to him. ' Rcudy.
