Alan ' s first responsibility as president was to plan the Junior Prom. He also selected the class motto and will plan the Senior Prom. Alan has been an active member of Student Coun- cil since junior high. He has attended several Student Council conventions and is a member of the Execu- tive Board of Student Council. Alan’s other activities include Thespians, A.F.S., and National Honor Soci- ety. Alan feels in youth we learn, in age we under- stand. 87 Dick Stephens „ Student Council President Last year Dick Stephens was elected by the students to be Student Council President for 1 972-73. Dick has been on Student Council since ninth grade and proved to be a valuable leader from the start. He is also on the Redbird Word Staff, was a Powder Puff Coach, and Chairman of the Grievance Committee. Dick Stephens remarked, I hope this year Student Council marked a change in its purpose from social activities to social problems.” 88 Bausch And Lomb Rensselaer Award The Bausch and Lomb Award will be presented to Pat Angel at this year ' s graduation. Pat was chosen by the Science Department as the student achieving the best record in study of science. She is now eligible to compete for one of several scholarships awarded at the University of Rochester. Congratulations to Patty! This year ' s winner of the Rensselaer award is Tim McElroy. Each year this award is presented by the Mathematics Department to a junior with the highest average and interest in science and mathematics. Tim is now eligible to apply for the Rensselaer Mathematics and Science Award Scholarships. Congratulations to Tim! D.A.R. Each year, the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsor the Good Citizen ' s Award. The award is given to one girl and one boy of the Senior Class who possess outstanding qualities of leadership, patriotism, service, and dependability. This year ' s winners are Becky Blair and Steve Shust. The society feels that tribute should be paid to these youths and attention called to those qualities which are desirable in good citizens. Congratulations to Becky and Steve! Yoshiko Asaka Our A.F.S. Student From Japan This year Alton High is proud to welcome Yoshiko Asaka as our A.F.S. student from Kyoto, Japan. Dur- ing her stay in the United States, Yoko, or Sam (her American nickname), is living with the family of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Estebo. At Alton High, Yoko is studying Psychology, United States History, Music Appreciation, C.P. Eng- lish, and Spanish, her favorite subject and probably college major. She is most impressed with the friend- liness of Americans, especially the students of Alton High. Yoko also enjoys American food, especially orange juice, something new to her since her arrival to the United States. Among her other American favorites are Robert Wagner, “Three Dog Night, and “Chicago. One of Yoko ' s favorite pastimes is playing the piano, a talent which she has been developing since the age of four. She also loves watching basketball games and playing ping pong. The students of Alton High hope that Yoko has had an enjoyable year with many memories and will visit us again in the future. Yoko enjoys the Christmas tradition. Yoko gets advice from Mr. Callahan, her counselor. Yoko isn ' t always the model student! I Yok ° brin 9 ° P art ° f Ja P an wi,h her - All right) Who a e my lunch? 96 Just a little bit farther. ZORO! Gee! And Mr. Bonynge was such a nice guy too. According to my calculations I should be able to get 3,733,333 toothpicks. 104 I ' ll let you have it for only fifty cents. You didn ' t really eat that, did you? 105 I finolly found a good use for these cafeteria trays. Darn cafeteria trays! 107 Editor’s Message To the student body of Alton Senior High School: On these 288 pages, we have attempted to keep up the tradition of excellence in producing this 1972 — 1973 TATLER. We have tried to make this TATLER the best book possible and to put into it what you, the student body, want to see. Whether we have succeeded or not is up to the individual. However, the TATLER Staff does believe it has succeeded in capturing for the future some of the memories of the school year. If we have done this, our goal has been attained. I wish to thank the entire staff for a job well done. Special recognition must be given to Janice Bechtold and Sara Massey, my two co-editors who certainly did a tremendous job of keeping the production of the TATLER in order. Special thanks should also be given to Mr. Livengood, our advisor. Without him, this TATLER probably could not be made up to standards. We dedicate this book to the school and to tradition. Our purpose in Art is to provide experience in visual communications. We offer courses in the following areas: ceramics, sculpture, drawing, painting, crafts, and art appreciation. The classroom approach is that of problem-solving by means of student experimentation and manipulation of tools, materials, and processes. Through the music department, students may participate in four instrumental and three choral organizations which are scheduled during the school hours. In addition, two choral and three instrumental groups meet at other times during the day. Har- mony is offered to those students desiring to study the theoretical aspects of music and Appreciation to those desiring a general background from the consumer stand- point. The music staff feels that music is for the student and not the student for music. A student ' s development is limited only by his innate ability and his desire for prog- ress. MR.
