JOHNSON Superintendent of Schools 24 For more than two decades as Superintendent of Schools I have watched thousands of boys and girls progress through the public schools and leave high school as young men and young women. Most of these graduates have achieved success both in their school work and on the job. Successful students may come from either advantaged homes or disadvantaged homes. Some are rich and some are poor. Some enjoy excellent physical health and some do not. How can we explain their success? This may be impossible to do; however, I have observed that there is a close correlation between success and the application of ability, interest, and effort. We recommend this formula to you as you pursue your careers. Superintendent of Schools, MR. E. M. LEAMON, Assistant Superintendent Congratulations to those students who through their efforts contributed to the wholesome educational atmosphere of their high school. Best wishes to those who use their knowledge and abilities for the betterment of all mankind. MR. MACY PRUITT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Junior and Senior High School Curriculum. In every high school in the country there are students who have been rated high” in ability and low” in performance. This is unfortunate, be- cause our society needs both craftsmen and professional workers. There is no greater tragedy today than unused talents. MR. DEAN BROWNING, Administrative Assistant in charge of Vocational Education. Nothing so valuable is cheaper than courtesy. Courtesy is more than cheap. It’s free. It’s strange that, being free, it’s so rare. Let’s not cancel courtesy because of the lack of interest or dissent. administration staff MR. JAMES M. MINSKER President Many changes have taken place during the few years you have spent in hish school. The most historic and highly technological event of 2,000 years occurred when man landed on the moon and began its exploration. With great rapidity, also, sociological changes have taken place. In both our nation and in the outside world man continues to struggle lor more freedom lor the op- pressed and for assistance to those who, by American standards, are considered under-privileged. These events, as man strives to improve society and living conditions, present a purposeful challenge to all of us in the days ahead; but the challenge is even more directly to you young men and women who will graduate this year. You will have much influence both as individuals and as a group in determining the future of society and of the morals of our beloved country. Each of you has had the opportunity, provided by the generations ahead of you, to acquire a superior education. The responsibili- ty that now lies before you is to make the proper use of your education and knowledge for the benefit of all mankind. As you assume positions of leadership, may each of you have the knowledge, wisdom, patience, and integrity to apply your learn- ing to the creation of better communities where you reside, not only for your own children, but the generations to follow. This re- ponsibility will rest upon each of you now, and increasingly in the days to come. I congratulate each of you on your achievements thus far and humbly pray our Creator that your future years will be fruitful, and that your personal achievements will be rewarding both to you and your fellow citizens. 28 MR W. H. THOMAS 29 MR. HAROLD MATTHEWS Principal 30 The purpose of our school is to provide an education which allows each student to make the best use of his ability and to function with com- fort in society. The activities depicted in this book illustrate the degree of success of our school in accomplishing this goal. It is a pleasure to work with students who are actively participat- ing in their own betterment. Harold Matthews Principal MR. From the time of his election last spring, Kevin has worked to carry out the duties of his office. His first responsibility was the organization of the 1969 Junior Prom. Since then, Kevin has worked actively in the development of the class motto and the Senior Prom. A prominent member of the basketball and track teams, and an active participant in Stu- dent Council, the French Club, Pep Club, and the International Relations Club, Kevin has devoted much of his time to Alton High activities. 100 1 970 D AR,. AWARD WINNERS — Elizabeth McWhorter AND TTMOrHV REAOER This year’s winners of the annual D.A.R. Good Citizens Award are Elizabeth McWhorter and Timothy Keasler. The award, sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution, is given to one girl and one boy of the Senior Class who have excelled in the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. To quote the Society: The aim of this project is to pay tribute to youthful character and to call attention to those qualities which are desirable in good citizens. Congratulations, Lou and Tim, on this fine honor! 101 SAf UULCAHV OUR A.P.S. STUDENT TRW AUSIRAUA This year the American Field Service has sent us Gai Mulcahy from Lithgow, Australia. Gai is staying with the family of Mr. Fred T. Renshaw. She is most impressed with the friendliness of Americans. She also thinks Halloween and Thanksgiving, which are not celebrated in Aus- tralia, are great ideas. She is studying biology, English literature, cal- culus, psychology, sociology, and U.S. history. I’m really confused,” she says, by the sea- sons, Christmas should be in the middle of the summer!” Gai and the Renshaws enjoy a card game. 102 It’s just impossible to teach Australians how to knit. Gai sneaks in at 3 a.m. I guess Alton’s not on the map yet. OUR, WWGt STUDENT FRO t AUSTRIA — WEMMA STEINER This year we are privileged to have Hemma Steiner from Austria in our midst. She is study- ing trigonometry, college preparatory English, United States history, and physics here at Alton High. She also plays the flute in the orchestra. Although soccer is the most popular sport in Austria, Hemma thoroughly enjoyed our foot- ball games. She admits that she didn’t quite un- derstand all of it! The students of Alton High hope Hemma en- joys her year in Alton. She is staying with the family of Dr. Paul J. O’Neill. The O’Neill’s are glad to have a girl around the house again! 104 Hemma wears her dirndl, a traditional costume in Austria. Schnee! Hemma plays the piano beautifully. 105 EUZABBTW THOMAS OUR A-F.S. STUDENT TO INDIA Elizabeth Thomas, a member of the American Field Service, was privileged to participate in its Americans Abroad Program last summer. Eliza- beth resided with the family of Doctor Neil Pant in Bombay, India. During her stay, she studied the sitar at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Living in India has given Elizabeth a deeper understanding of people all over the world. The time is 1876 and the setting is Deadwood City, Dakota Territory. The story has a mix-up of romances. Calamity thinks she is in love with Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin, who has eyes only for the dance hall girl, Katie Brown. Wild Bill Hick- ok also has eyes for Katie. In the end everyone is matched up properly — Wild Bill and Calam, Danny and Katie. All ends well as the Deadwood Stage Honeymoon Express leaves with its happily matched couples. 122 Francis Fryer and Susan 123 I Can Do Without You” Wild Bill and Calamity ' Jane Love You Dearly” Danny and Katie DANCING CHORUS: Marcia Merideth, Martha Lewis, Diana Maul, Maury Kennedy, Kendall Sidener, Debbie Johns, Marla Jeffress, Susie Heitz, Marty Barbary. The summer ended and football kicked off with two fine games. The Quincy Blue Devils were turned homeward on the heels of a 26-6 defeat as the Birds began work for the cross-town rivals, the Marquette Ex- plorers. The Redbirds romped to a second victory 48 zip. The Redbirds then hit the road, traveling to Parsons Field for a night game against the E. St. Louis Flyers. In a disappointing 8-6 game the Redbirds got their first taste of defeat. They returned home to face the Warriors of Granite City and their second consecutive loss by only 2 points, this time 16-14. The following week a quick, aggressive St. Louis U. team invaded Public School Stadium. The Jr. Billikens left with a 35-6 win. The Redbirds met the visiting Tigers of Edwardsville on a rainy afternoon in a mud-filled contest. In the end the Tigers slid to a 13-8 victory Conference Champions Belleville West hosted the Birds, but proved not too hospitable as they defeated Alton, 26-16 in a hard-fought battle. Alton bounced back against Collinsville’s Kahoks in a well-played game 26-6. Alton made quick work of the Wood River Oilers as they trounced them 42-18 on the Oilers’ home field. The season ended on a somber note as the Birds trav- eled to St. Louis CBC and engaged in battle in frigid weather with scattered snow flurries. The dimly-lighted field provided little aid as the Cadets won 43-8. The team wishes to thank the Booster Club and stu- dent body for their support throughout the season. The TATLER Staff congratulates the team and coaches Yonkus, Koenig, Iman, and Thorpe on their valiant effort throughout the season. Milton Johnson started the day by finishing third in the open 440 yard dash; and later he anchored t he mile relay team, which finished sec- ond, with a time of 47.5 for his quarter mile. Doug Mendenhall was one of the 13 pole vaulters in the state that qualified for the finals and he tied for eighth in the finals. Jim Scruggs and Gerry Wilson were two key parts in the winning 1 8 J yard relay team. Roger Bower and Charles Ross helped in making the mile relav turn in the fastest qualifying time. Our long jumper did excellently, too. George Gil- chrest finished sixth, but Oscar Wallace finished first. In doing this. Oscar set .a new state record of 24 ' 614 . Alton High should be proud of its state championship track team. The team couldn’t have made it without the support of the other team members. Despite the many early season rain-outs, Alton jumped to a 10-0 mid-season record. The team ended regular season play with an impressive 15-5-1 record which included no-hitters by Gary Hagen against Granite City, Alan Cruthis against East St. Louis, and Rick Reidt against South- western. For the second straight year Alton claimed the Southwestern Conference Base- ball crown. Alton entered the State Tournament as the Roxana District favorite and came through with victories against Roxana and Marquette. Proceeding to the Edwardsville Regional the Redbirds downed Dupo and Granite City to capture the regional at Staun- ton. Reidt’s second no-hitter, against Pitts- field, followed by a win over Springfield Griffin, earned Alton a berth in the State Fi- nals at Peoria. In the quarter-finals the Red- birds were edged (3-2) by a fine Highland Park team. Gary Hagen was named the right-handed pitcher on the State All-Tournament team. Three Alton players, Dan Conners, Rick Glazebrook, and Gary Hagen, won positions on the Post-Dispatch All-Metro team. Hagen was also drafted and signed by the Atlanta Braves Professional Baseball Organi- zation. Their next game was against East St. Louis, our first conference win. Then our Redbirds traveled to Ed- wardsville for their first away game where they racked up thC: second conference win. We then traveled to Belleville East where we lost a hard fought 71-66 battle to a team which was in the top eight in the state last year. Alton then racked up its third conference win against Woodriver. In our final game before the Car- bondale Holiday Tournament our Birds defeated a good Jacksonville ball club. In the Carbondale tournament we upset second seed- ed Meridian 70-65 in the first round, and were defeated by Marion in the second round. Upon return from Carbondale, our Redbirds defeated favored Collinsville, 85-84 on two free throws by Don Koppenhaver in the last six seconds. High point man for the Redbirds was Don Koppenhaver with 34 points. The game was a superb team effort. The next night Alton was defeated by Mater Dei. Traveling to Belleville West, they overcame an 88 point difference to defeat Belleville by four points. Ron Caldwell chalked up 35 points in that contest. The fol- lowing night, Alton suffered their first conference loss to a good shooting Granite City ball team. At this writing, Alton High ' s Redbirds are 5-1 in the conference and 7-5 overall with eight games and the Belleville East Tournament remaining. The TATLER Staff wishes continued success to Coaches Sterret, Miller, and McPherson, and the players for the remainder of the season. 193 Horton and Koppenhaver go up for the rebound. They lost twice to Belleville West and once to Edwardsville, and tied Granite City. Our team finished second to Belleville West, State Champions, both in the conference and the district. Alton had some fine senior golfers in Paul Springman, Tim Wickenhauser, and Don Schroeder. Our junior golfers were led by John Fischer, who had the best record of any Alton golfer. Other lettermen are Cliff Emmons and Steve Vassier. With the help of Dave Cousley, Jeff Edgar, Gary Barton, and David Lock, Alton should expect another fine season. The TATLER Staff wishes to congratulate Coach McPherson and his team on their excel- lent season. The Alton cross country team had a season of many successes and a few disappointments in 1969- They sparked a 7-0 record in dual and triangular meet competition. The Redbirds started the season’s flight at the second annual Big Ten Meet finishing second to Kirkwood, the Missouri state champions. With ruffled tail feathers, the Redbirds obtained sweeping victories over St. Louis U. High and Quincy. They barely defeated Southwestern Confer- ence rivals, Belleville West and Collinsville, on a rainy, very slippery Col- linsville course. With wings dampened a little, dual meet competition continued with victories over Collinsville, Hazelwood, Woodriver, and Vashon. Alton traveled to Peoria to place seventh out of forty-one schools in the Peoria Invitational Meet. A tough Beaumont Invitational Meet of thirty-one schools saw Alton finish second to Kirkwood. The Redbirds, upset by Belleville West in the Southwest Conference meet at Alton, came back three days later to win the District Meet over the same course. The Sectional Meet at Springfield proved to be one of the few disappoint- ments. Our Redbirds finished fourth, qualifying one man, Elijah Burgess, for the State Meet. The sophomore squad had an outstanding season with an undefeated performance; promising to be a fine team in the years to come. The TATLER Staff thanks the boys for their efforts this past year. Coaches Wigger and Middleton deserve special recognition for their fine handling of the team. 200 Captains Cannon and Bode Burgess finishes third. Alton fights for position. The gun sounds. SOPfWORE. The tennis Redbirds added to an al- ready impressive sports year at Alton High. Coach Sterrett’s team, with an admirable 9-4 season record, finished third in the Southwestern Conference standings. Alton placed Kim Barnett and fourth-seeded Robert Simpson in the D istrict match at Granite City in the Singles Division. In the Doubles category Alton sent Jack Groppel and Bill Wicks, who were seeded number one. Groppel, earning 33 points, com- piled one of the best individual rec- ords in recent years. Simpson also turned in an outstanding record with his 30 points. Congratulations to the team and Coach Sterrett from the TATLER Staff. At this point of the season our record is 1-5-1, our only win coming against Mascoutah. We also finished third in our own Alton Tournament. This TATLER is a record of your life at Alton Senior High School during 1970. It is a record of clubs, activities, honors, victories, and defeats. It shows the good times and the bad times. Adults point out that when you graduate, your life is just beginning. This is true. The TATLER tries to help you remember the expe- riences you encountered in high school and keep them a high point in your life. I would like to thank and congratulate each member of the 1970 TATLER Staff for the contributions they made in creating this book. Special praise is deserved by Lou McWhorter and Anne Schrimpf for the great job they did as Co-Editors and by Mr. Livengood for his constant help as advisor. Mr. Livengood ' s encourage- ment and sound advice helped the 1970 TATLER Staff to make this TATLER as excellent as possible. We present this TATLER to you, the student body, who deserves the very best. Editor-in-Chief 1970 TATLER TIM KEASLER Editor-in-Chief T£TL£R SlAFP ANNE SCHRIMPF Co- Editor lou McWhorter Co- Editor MR.
