BOARD OF EDUCATION MR. ROBERT S. MINSKER President This year, you and thousands of other young men and women will graduate from our high schools and universities; and every year, thousands more will follow in your footsteps. As individuals, each of you will have the advantage of a superior education provided by the affluent society in which you have lived and grown up. This advantage of an education did not just happen. It is the result of the hard work, perseverance, and foresight of innumerable men and women of earlier generations. In a very real sense they are passing on to you the learning and knowledge of the past, and they expect you to carry on in the future. Why have teachers, parents, relatives, and friends provided this opportunity to study ' and learn? Basically because they know that within a few short years you will run the towns, cities, states, and nation. You will be responsible for the operation of our business, financial institutions, schools, industrial complexes, churches, and social agencies; and will conduct your nation ' s world affairs. You will have the opportunity to write the great books, innovate ideas, engineer the research, and design and build the great buildings. Lastly, but of greater import, your ideals and your actions will determine whether in the future we have a nation and a world of discord of peace, of want or plenty. The intelligence, skill, and competence you apply will shape the future for your nation and for coming generations. If your ac- complishments are great, the results will be great; never forgetting that this greatness can only be achieved if your basic philosophy and lives include the most important tenets of honesty, integrity, thrift, and meaningful use of time. 26
