DR. J. B. JOHNSON Superintendent of Schools 22 Today an education is a necessity and not a luxury. What you achieve in high school will determine your success or failure in business, industry, or college. The competition is so great that less than your best should never be considered. Your suc- cess and the future of our great country depend on your achieve- ment, attitude and interest. You, along with thousands of other young men and women now in high school and college, will be the future leaders in local, state, and national affairs. Most of you have the ability to suc- ceed. All you need to add is desire and hard work. ARE YOU GOING TO BE PREPARED TO ACCEPT RE- SPONSIBILITY? I wish you success and happiness, J. B. Johnson, Ed. D. You will find that the intricate problems of becom- ing a high school graduate will help you to develop a firm basis for future growth and maturity. Cherish these days of opportunity and learning. They will bring you happiness throughout your life. MR. C. R. WRIGHT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Vocational Education. As educators, we must constantly evaluate our educa- tional programs and determine if we are meeting the needs of every student. MR. MACY PRUITT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Junior and Senior High School Curriculum. The pursuit of happiness is the inalienable right of every citizen of our country. Whether or not it is found depends upon our understanding. A wise man has de- fined it in this way: Happiness is contentment result- ing from what we are, rather than what we have.” 25 06A L 0 Mr. Walter B. Miller, Mr. Harold Davidson, Secretary; Mr. George A. Chandler, Mr. Robert S. Minsker, President; Dr. David E. Bear, Mr. W. H. Thomas, Mr. J. Edwin Sunderland. Each individual life is full of hopes, desires, ambitions, frustrations, sorrows, and joys; and similarly, upon each in- dividual at various times are bestowed experiences which make us fortunate.” You young men and women, and thousands like you who graduate this year, can be included in this category of the fortunate. Fortunate, indeed, because you have grown up and lived in a free society that provides for all its youth a free educa- tion over and beyond that available in any other nation. Fortunate, indeed, that your country has out-distanced all other nations, largely as the direct result of an en- lightened citizenry who enjoy advantages of a superior educa- tional program, of which you have been a vital part the past 12 years. Fortunate, indeed, that in our democratic society you will be afforded the opportunity to utilize the educational founda- tion you have acquired to the degree you wish, as a corner- stone on which to continue your education and pursue your life’s work. May you be fortunate, indeed, in using that op- portunity well. Robert S. Minsker President Board of Education 26 MR. ROBERT S. MINSKER, President MR. HAROLD DAVIDSON Secretary MR. WALTER B. The Alton Senior High School hopes to provide a basic curriculum for all students and a depth in content for those who are capable. The school at- tempts to do this through teaching the students study skills, individual responsibilities, to have an inquir- ing mind, and to gain satisfaction in learning as well as to gain talent for effectual human relations. Alton High School is honored this year to have as its exchange student Martin von Kaenel from Zurich, Switzerland. Martin, who resides with Mr. and Mrs. James E. Martin’s visit to the United States is sponsored by the American Field Service. Alton High School, an active member of this program, not only receives students from other countries, but also sends many of its own students abroad. We, of Alton High, hope Martin’s stay has been as enjoyable for him as it has been for us. MARTIN VON KAENEL jrss rara Come out, come out . . . wherever you are. BatehaM The Alton High baseball team, coached by Mr. Tyler and Mr. Macias, reached the state tournament this year. After an 11-8 season the baseball team came through with clutch wins against Wood River and Roxana to win the district tournament. Their next accomplishment was beating Highland and Edwardsville, there- by winning the regional tournament. Two more victories were made over Springfield and the traditional rival, Granite City, to win the section- al tournament. Alton then won over Austin of Chicago in the first round of the state tourna- ment at Peoria, and advanced to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals we lost to Main South, 6-8. Alton placed two players on the all-star state tournament team — Bob Gruver, right field, and Danny Weaver, left field. With a squad heavily loaded with juniors, Coach Sterrett managed to salvage a 5-7 season. The season started slowly with losses to Edwardsville, but then the team rallied to defeat Wood River and Collinsville. Then Alton came up against the power houses of the conference, Belleville and Gran- ite City. Alton wound up the season by splitting a series with Roxana. The final record of 4-5 is deceiving because the team played better than the record indicates. The week-end warriors, led by all-state tackle Brian Dickerson, opened the season with a loss to Quincy in a hard-fought game. Next came victories over our cross-town rival, Marquette, and Granite City. This was followed by heart-breaking losses to St. Louis University High School and East St. Louis. Alton then journeyed to Edwardsville to defeat them at their homecoming game. Next Alton was handed losses by Belleville and surpris- ingly strong Collinsville. One of the most impressive games of ' the season followed when we defeated Wood River 47-6. The outlook for next year is very bright, with an undefeated group of sophomores coming up to join a large squad of re- turning lettermen. The team was one of steady improvement. The team captains were Nick Rangel and Leroy Ross, who were returning lettermen. Other lettermen who helped lead the team to vic- tory were Jim Fischer and Pat Wilson. This year, as every year since 1951, our team was a state cross-country contender. Our boys took second place behind Belleville in the twenty-six team state qualifying meet held in Alton this year. In the conference meet we took third place behind Belle- ville and East St. Louis. At the Illinois State High School Cross-Country Meet held in Champaign, our squad placed eleventh, a definite improvement over the seventeenth place taken last year. In this meet, two of our runners, Jim Fischer and Pat Wilson, placed first and second from our district. An interesting fact is that although we were beaten by Belleville in the district meet, we came in ahead of them in the state meet, which demon- strated the capability of our team. This year’s varsity squad was backed up by a powerful sophomore team which went undefeated in the 1966 season. Three members of this squad earned letters; this in itself is quite an achievement. These boys were Charles Ross, Vernon Kidwell, and Dennis Manns. This group of hardworking run- ners will clearly be an asset to our Cross-Country teams in the next two years. The 1966 Cross-Country team, coached by Mr. Wigger and Mr. Middleton, was one of which to be very proud. Their next game was at Mt. Vernon, where they were defeated by a slim six point margin. The Redbirds bounced back, however, by winning their next game over Jacksonville. The Redbirds then took the honors in their own invitational tournament. The participating teams were Alton, Trico, Civic Memorial, and Marquette. Alton clinched the victory by defeating Trico in the final game of the tournament. Alton lost the next game to conference foe Ed- wardsville, again by a slim margin. Alton then defeated Wood River by a substantial lead. Our team then took part in the Carbondale Holi- day Tournament. Alton defeated Olney in their first game; but they were eliminated, however, by Collinsville. The Redbirds then faced two tough conference foes on successive nights. They were de- feated by both Collinsville and Belleville. As of the present, Alton High’s Redbird’s are 1-3 in the conference and 7-5 overall, with ten games remaining. Hardimon starts a drive. This book is meant to be a reminder of your accomplishments as a student body as well as your achievements and activities as individuals. You are the stars of this yearbook; you are the ones who have furnished the material for the Tatler; and, I hope, you will be the ones who will derive both benefit and pleasure from it. The production of our yearbook is to the credit of the staff members who have performed their job in completing the Tatler without fail. To them goes my heartfelt thanks for a wonderful job. I would also like to thank Mr. Dale Livengood, our advisor, who each year devotes so much of his time to train and inspire the staff and without whom production of a Tatler would be impossible.
