4 Zhe Zatler Presented by Zhe Class of ’65 Alton Senior High School Alton, Jllinois Meeting with administrators. Public high schools in America have been designed for the benefit of all of the pupils. The academic and voca- tional programs have been emphasized; however, the co- curricular programs play an important role in the ed- ucational development of all pupils. They should strive to do their best at all times. Dr. Johnson and Dr. Moore confer. Visit to Central Junior High. Good high scho ols should prepare pupils for college and or business or industry. To do so, the schools must inspire the pupils and develop enthusiasm for reading, in- dependent study, individual thought, and effective expres- sion, both oral and written. This kind of education cannot be made obsolete by automation and other technological changes within the pupil ' s life span. Graduates of Alton High School must be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the best graduates of all other high schools and assume responsible positions in society as good citizens. Competition today is the greatest that we have ever met. Nevertheless, there will always be room at the top for those who are willing to think and to work. A philosopher has said, A man may fall many times, but he is not a failure until he claims that some- one pushed him. Best wishes for success. J. B. Johnson, Ed. D. Superintendent of Schools Alton, Illinois Every production of genius must be the production of en- thusiasm. Disraeli. Superintendents through the years: R. A. Haight, 1881-1918; Dr. C. W. Reavis, 1918-1921; W. R. Curtis, 1921-1941; Dr. P. L. Ewing, 1942- 1947. Mark, Craig, and Grandfather. 3 Administrative Staff MR. JAMES M. CASPER MR. LEROY FRITZ MR. FRANK GIRARD MR. DON KEIL Director of Audio Visual Ed- Director of Music and School- Director of Art. School Engineer, ucation. Community Relations. MISS ELSIE KOHLMAN Director of Nursing. MR. JAMES MEYERS Director of Athletics MR. LLOYD NORMAN Director of Special Education. MR. RAYMOND READY Administrative Assistant in charge of Elementary Cur- riculum. MISS MARY E. SIDWELL Director of Home Economics and Lunch Service. MISS MAXINE STEVENSON Director of Libraries. MR. DEAN TAYLOR Director of Counseling and Guidance. MR. PEARL WOODS Head Custodian. 4 MR. E. M. LEAMON, Assistant Superintendent. Time stands still only for those who have lost their enthusiasm. MR. C. R. WRIGHT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Vocational Education. It is of utmost importance that we continue to recognize and give special attention to the in- dividual needs of all students as early as possible in our educational programs. The school must adjust the curriculum to the learner rather than the learner to the curriculum. MR. MACY PRUITT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Junior and Senior High School Curri- culum. At the close of school a few years ago a first grade pupil overheard a kindergarten pupil boasting about his promotion. He tried to deflate the kindergartener ' s ego by saying, ' You ' ll find first grade work mighty rough! ' It was ' rough ' compared with the previous year ' s work. But the record shows that the kin- dergarten pupil continued to make excellent grades. He can do the same each succeeding year in school and on the job in business or industry. It is a rule of life that finishing the lesser tasks prepares us for the greater ones. 9 ■fL f w J [ ' Tr r — - W y AAR. WALTER B. AAILLER AAR. J. EDWIN SUNDERLAND AAR. ROBERT S. AAINSKER President AAR. W. H. THOAAAS The Alton Senior High School hopes to provide a basic curriculum for all students and a depth in con- tent for those who are capable. The school attempts to do this through teaching the students study skills, individual responsibilities, to have an inquiring mind, and to gain satisfaction in learning as well as to gain talent for effectual human relations. TOWSE nubwisisiT lnnotnmw Cafeteria Custodians Our New Addition The 1965 school year welcomes a new addition to our campus. This new building includes twenty- two new classrooms which bring the total num- ber of classrooms in the Annex to thirty-four. An outstanding feature of the new building is that it furnishes the entire Annex with air conditioning. An attempt has been made to provide almost all subjects in the Annex so as to reduce the num- ber of students traveling from one building to an- other. Our new cafeteria, which facilitates six hundred students at one time, is a great improvement over our previous one. It allows the student more time to eat his meal as well as providing a pleasant at- mosphere. 23 foreword The 1 965 Tatler presents the leadership, scholar- ship, sportsmanship, and development of per- sonality that you have gained here at Alton High. Your life here has been a colorful one and we have tried to show its many facets. On the surface, it is probably true that there is not much difference between one school year and another; but below the surface each year has a different individuality and character all its own. We hope to have captured some of this charac- ter in the ' 65 ' Tatler. This annual is your guide to the memories of this year ... its laughter, its tears, its joys, and its adventures. It is our hope that this yearbook will serve to spark memories for you in the years to come. After taking the state championship in 1963, the Red- birds came back for a comparatively slow start. The Birds breezed through two indoor dual meets with East St. Louis and Soldan of St. Louis, then placed second in the Oak Park Quadrangular. The Redbirds then fell to a third in the St. Louis Open Track Meet, being somewhat ham- pered by the temporary loss of Andrew Johnson and Richard Swift due to injuries. The next week with Andrew back in the running, Alton tied for fifth place with Phillips of Chicago in the Oak Park Relays, which Alto n had dominated last year. Soon the Alton Redbirds ' familiar winning style began to show through. After steamrolling Granite City in a 95V2-22V2 dual, Alton captured its own Invitational Re- lays title, the Hirst-Busch Relays title, and swamped East St. Louis in a 107-70 battle in the Conference Relays. After the Conference Relays Alton continued its usual show of power by holding down Lincoln and Edwardsville in a fast-moving triangular. Next the Alton team travelled up- state and brought home the first-piace trophy from the Normal Relays. Back at home the Alton Redbirds domi- nated the County Meet and the East St. Louis Relays, leav- ing only one meet between Alton and the State Track Meet. 138 At the District Meet, highly favored Alton won with 62 points over second-place Lincoln with 36 points. But far more important, Alton qualified 10 individuals and both relay teams for the state meet at Champaign-Urbana. The following weekend the Redbirds, the defending champions, held on to their title in a furious battle with New Trier to win 19-18. Afterwards, the Redbirds returned home and had no trouble capturing their own conference crown. Besides winning the state track meet this year, our track team was undefeated in the outdoor season. This is a record which speaks for itself. Speaking for the Tatler Staff and the student body we offer our thanks to Coach Wigger and the Alton High Redbirds for one of the great- est track seasons we have had. The Birds finished the regular season with a 12-9 record, but ended on a rather unhappy note by losing their first game of the District competition, giving them a 12-10 overall record. On April 9 the Birds broke a three-game losing streak by beating the Wood River Oilers in a 5-3 victory. All five runs were scored in the third inning when Woofe, Brooks, Scheer, Hardi- mon, and Pace each scored one. The next week Alton gained a close victory over Southwestern in a non-conference game. Brent Gwillim had a no-hitter going until the sixth inning when Southwestern rallied and tied the score before relief pitcher Mike Vandergriff gained control. The 5-5 game went into an extra inning when the winning run was scored by Alton. Two days later at Belleville the Birds edged the Maroons in a conference game. Denny Wooff was forced home on a walk and Randy Pace scored on a hit by Gary Boyd. Dave Stalker pitched for Alton, striking out four and allowing only two hits. The Granite City Warriors were barely edged in a 1-0 contest. The only run of the game was scored in the third inning when, with the bases loaded, Randy Pace came across on a bunt by Denny Wooff. On April 22, Mike Vandergriff pulled the Redbirds out of a tight spot in a game against East St. Louis. Relief pitcher Vandergriff came into the game in the first inning with three men on and no outs, but he allowed only three hits the rest of the game. Dave Stalker drove in two runs on two singles to top off the 3-1 victory. In the first game of District play Alton ran into some hard luck and was nipped by the Wood River Oilers in a 1-0 loss; this last game of the season put Alton out of the District contest. The Alton High golf team had a highly successful season this year with Belleville, the only team that actually posed a serious problem. The Birds finished the season with a 13-3 record. The Redbirds downed Assumption and Marquette twice in dual meets and beat. Wood River and Lebanon twice in triangulars. Other victories were over Western Military Academy, Granite City, Collinsville, and O ' Fallon. On Saturday, May 5, Alton participated in the Quincy Invitational, one of the more important tournaments of the year. The hard-hitting Redbirds finished a respectable fourth in a tough field. They were unable to break the Belleville jinx, placing second to them in a dual and in the Conference standings also. In the District tournament they came through to a strong fourth place but still were unable to beat the strong Belleville team. We wish to thank Coach Matthews and the team for the fine job they have done. 146 Zennis In their second year of varsity tennis the Alton High netmen finished the season with a 7-6 record. The Birds won twice over Collinsville and Western Mili- tary Academy, but were blanked twice themselves by a strong Belleville team. Although the Redbirds finished the season with an average record, they placed highly in the most important matches. Under Coach Carey the Redbirds tied for a sec- ond place in the District tournament. This is Coach Carey ' s last year with us and we thank him especially for the fine teams he has produced for us. The Devils proved to be devilish and defeated Alton 12-0. The second game, against our cross-town rival, Marquette, was a surprising upset. Although Al- ton gained almost twice as much yardage as the Explorers, the Explorers got the yards that counted and won 1 4-0. Another traditional rival. East St. Louis, defeated Alton the following week 32-7. Alton ' s single touchdown was scored by Dave Joehl. Alton ' s fourth defeat came at the hands of Granite City, who won 13-0. On October 17, the Big Red traveled to Decatur to play MacArthur High School. The Redbirds fought stubbornly and scored their first victory, 19-0. Our three touchdowns were scored by Joehl, Wallendorf, and Dan Kennedy. The following weekend Alton again played a strong game and held Edwardsville in check 20-0. In the next three games, Belleville, Collinsville, and Wood River delivered three costly defeats to Alton with scores of 35-0, 35-7, and 34-0, respectively. In the last game of the season on November 20, the team showed Alton ' s traditional winning style and overcame Hannibal 34-12. Dave Joehl and Fred Wallendorf scored two touchdowns each and Larry Kolesa scored the fifth touchdown. This gave Alton a season ' s record of 3 wins and 7 losses. However, neither the scores of the games nor the winning or losing of the games is really important. From a previous TATLER come the words: Win or lose, we accept the terms of competition; our reward: a deepened character. This is applicable to our team this year. Each member exhibited and upheld the spirit for which Redbird athletes are well-known. Never once did our players admit defeat by their actions on the field. The tenacity and perseverance, coupled with excellent sportsmanship is the most essential and meaningful element of a great football team. The team, as a whole, showed commendable sportsmanship and played admirable football. Three players, in particular, were honored by being chosen for the All-District Football Team: Frank Kozicky, guard; Gaylen Osborne, guard; and Fred Wallendorf, fullback. Too marry cooks may spoil the broth, but, as far as football coaches are concerned, this adage does not hold true. The 1965 TATLER Staff wishes to thank the coaching staff of Mr. Ralph McClain, Mr. Richard Johnson, Mr. Pete Stavros, Mr. Jack Tanner, Mr. Felix Macias, and Mr. Wilfred Buddell for their excellent support in encouraging and coaching our team. Besides winning numerous dual meets, the team placed fourth in the thirty-five team Beaumont Invitational Meet in St. Louis, and also received fourth place in the Edwardsville Invitational. The Redbird barriers placed second in the Peoria Invitational, a meet composed of thirty-three of the best teams in Illinois. In the Southwestern Conference Meet, the Redbirds finished first, far ahead of the closest competitor, Belleville. Alton has never failed to place first or second in the District Meet in order to qualify for the State Meet. This year was no dif- ferent as the Redbirds again overcame their strongest competition, Belleville, on our own Rock Spring Park course. The following weekend the Redbirds placed fifteenth in the State Meet. We think that this record speaks for itself in com- plimenting our team for their efforts, and, with four juniors and two sophomores lettering this year, next year seems to promise just as exciting a season. Ralph Sterrett, the Alton Redbirds stepped onto the boards for the ' 64- ' 65 basketball season. Although the sea- son is less than half-finished, Mr. Sterrett, who re- placed Mr. Hermon Edwards, has shown himself an able leader for the Redbirds. The Redbirds played a surprisingly strong Mt. Ver- non team on November 28 for their opener. Although our defense was good, offensive play did not develop and the Redbirds fell, 53-42. In conference play on December 4, the Redbird cagers squeaked by the East Side Flyers, scoring 46 against the Flyers ' 44. The next day the Birds suffered a reverse and lost to Jacksonville, 66-53. Although the Birds lost the first game of their own Invitational Tournament, it was one of their best games and the Redbirds were really pounding the boards. The DeAndreis Wildcats, doing some pretty wild playing, won by a scant two points in an 82-80 showdown. On the next day the Birds kept up their fine playing and defeated CBC, 63-61, giving them third place in the four-team tourney. At Wood River, Alton took its first conference beating. The game was highly exciting, with both teams constantly challenging for a lead, but, the Oilers held out, unfortunately, and won 66-63. On December 19, the Birds again fell in a very close game with a 46-44 score in favor of Mater Dei. Jeffries leaps high for the save. Alton gets caught out of position. The Redbirds, seeing some holiday action, shot into the quarter-finals of the Carbondale Invitational Tourna- ment, after a tight game with highly favored Evanston, winning over the Wildkits, 47-45. Our hopes in this tournament were short lived as West Frankfort dealt the Birds a tough loss, 67-55. At the last game up to this point in the season, the Redbirds, seeming to thrive on very close games, closed over the Granite City Warriors 67-65. As the record stands now, Alton has won four and lost six— not quite breaking even. However, in our own Conference, we rank 2-1, second on ly to the powerful Collinsville team who has a 3-0 record. Our next game will be a deciding factor in our conference future as we play the Kahoks on their own court, January 9. If we win, we will be tied for a first place in the conference and could well go on to the championship. We ' re all hoping that Coach Sterrett and his Redbirds can haul in some important victories in the rest of our season. Here ' s wishing our boys the best of luck from the ' 65 Tatler Staff. There will be room because Olin Mathieson is growing. When Olin Industries, Inc., merged with the Mathieson Chemical Corporation in August, 1954, they brought together the skills, facilities, and resources of two of the country ' s most rapidly ex- panding industrial organizations. We extend our best wishes to you. May the future bring you all you ' ve hoped for and everything for which you have worked. olin MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION GINTER-WARDEIN COMPANY D R Y L U M B E R 81 Henry Street Alton, Illinois 465-3588 GODFREY STATE BANK Your Northside Drive-in Bank Phone 466-3446 MEMBER F.
