76e s4£to t Setti i School 4Cto t f ?(Cu oc4- Talking with members of the Tatler staff In conference with administrators I want to comment on the importance of an education in this atomic-space age. Some of you may think that a high school diploma is all that you need to get a good job. Experience will prove that a diploma is not enough. And further, academic and technical train- ing that is required to find a suitable position will undoubtedly increase each year. The personnel officer in the employment office and the col- lege admissions officer will be interested in your ability and your attitude, as well as your achievement. I strongly urge all of you to make a self-analysis of these qualities and discuss them with your parents and counselors. Your future deserves careful planning. The public school curriculum in Alton makes it possible for you to get a good high school education. It is important that you take advantage of the opportunity. The record you make will follow you into business, industry, or college; and only your best efforts will prepare you to compete. Please remember that Less than your best is not success.’ Dr. J. B. Johnson MR. E. M. LEAMON, Assistant Superintendent The short periods of time we pause along life’s turbulent road to enjoy the companionship of our fellow men, will help us to develop a wholesome personality and provide us with many g ratifying memories.” f £ MR. MACY PRUITT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Junior and Senior High School Curriculum. ' Conditions in the world are changing so rapidly that we tend to lose our perspective. We have emphasized science and neglected social studies, art, and music. We must put equal emphasis on all areas of the curriculum. Science has reduced the world to a neighborhood; the other subjects must make it a brotherhood.” 4 MR. C. R. WRIGHT, Administrative Assistant in charge of Vocational Education. ' According to Projections of the U. S. Depart- ment of Labor, the years ahead will find Vocational Education serving ever larger numbers of Americans. Present increased enrollments in Vocational Ed- ucation are indicative of the trend toward more satis- factory utilization and training of available man- power, upon which our way of life depends.” rfcLt U U4frMitive MISS LOUISE ANTHONY Director of Libraries. THOMAS The Alton Senior High School strives to provide a school environment which will be conducive to the de- velopment of learning to the best ability of each stu- dent. The school does everything possible to contribute to the social adjustment of each student. The school personnel attempts to create within the student a sense of obligation as a school, community, and world citizen. These girls put forth much time and effort creating new cheers. They give their time for practicing and travelling with the team to represent our school. It is their job to keep school spirit high when the going is rough. This is not always easy to do. From the first kickoff, it was evident that Alton’s football squad would be ' true to form.” In the first game, Alton trounced Quincy 45-0. This game was highlighted by an 85 yard pass- interception touchdowm by tackle Richard Green. Terry Mitchell and Danny Rogers each tallied two touchdowns to aid the cause. Alton’s hard-charging defense stole the show when Alton downed cross-town rival, Marquette, 33-7. On defense Richard Stevenson, Jim Minsker, Bob Boedeker, and George Fulkerson constantly harassed the Explorer backfield w ' hile the Redbird offense continued to roll onward. Again Alton’s defense held those tough East St. Louis Flyers and Alton came away with a 7-0 win. The touchdown resulted from a spectacular 73 yard screen pass from quarterback Danny Gantz to halfback Terry Mitchell. The whole defensive line played its best game of the season as they held the Flyers to a total of 52 yards. Alton’s offense completely ran over hapless Granite City 33-0. Gantz and Mitchell each scored two touchdowns to pave the way to victory. The Birds then played host to C. B. C. of St. Louis on a muddy field with rain falling constantly. With both teams unable to get their footing, C. B. C. slipped” by the Redbirds 7-0. Both teams played well in a very exciting contest, but C. B. C. gained the victory. Alton then clashed with the Edwardsville Tigers in another Southwestern Conference game. The Redbirds scored two touchdowns late in the game to edge Edwardsville 20-13. Fullback Dennis Brandt contributed two touchdowns in this all-important game. After acquiring an early touchdown in the Belleville-Alton game, the Redbirds’ offense fell apart and the Maroons won 20-7. This was a heart-breaking loss as it cost the Redbirds the Southwestern Conference crown. Alton then downed a tough Collinsville squad 12-0 on a cold misty evening. Coach McClain’s boys played an excellent game for the victory. In the final game, , Alton romped Wood River 28-6. At the close of the season, Alton ranked second in the Southwestern Coherence. __ We have four players who r ted highly in post-season ootbay poHs. They then met Riverview Gardens at Municipal Golf Course (their home course) in a dual meet and came out on top. History repeated itself as they beat E. St. Louis in a dual meet at E. St. Louis. The Birds, now ready for the big boys,” finished third in the Belleville Invitational, fifth in the Peoria Invitational, and fourth in the Beaumont Invitational, all of which were large meets. On a tough Forest Park golf course they lost their only dual meet to Kirkwood. This did not stop them, however, as they commenced to win the Conference Crown — edging an Edwardsville team who had beaten them all year, the District— also beating Edwardsville, and finally finishing an excellent tenth in the state meet held at Champaign-Urbana. The next evening Alton beat Mount Vernon in the last second of the game, making the score 56-55. Then on Pearl Harbor Day the Redbirds ran over East St. Louis with a 62-36 victory in their first Southwestern Conference battle. They then met the Decatur Reds”, defending state champions, and came out on top, 48-38. In the next game the Redbirds met their first defeat at the hands of Edwardsville, 61-56, in a hard- fought contest. The following Friday night saw the Redbirds” fighting a see-saw battle with the Wood River Oilers . Alton got the edge on some last minute free throws and overcame their opponents, 48-47. As the Christmas holidays arrived, the Redbirds met the Madison Trojans” in the first game of the East St. Louis Tournament. The Redbirds”, unable to connect with accuracy, took a beating, 63-53. In consolation play Alton couldn ' t muster a solid attack and lost to Jacksonville, 65-57, eliminating themselves from further tourney action. The Birds” opened the new year with a game against Collinsville in which they couldn’t get started and lost 70-56. The following night brought Alton home to meet Belleville’s Maroons”, the .op-rated team in the state. It was a close, hard-fought contest through the first half, but Belleville seemed to have the edge. In the last quarter Alton failed to overcome the Maroons” as they were tripped 63-53. With the sound of the starter’s gun, the Alton High Track Team began another very prosperous season. Competing first in the Oak Park Quadrangular Indoor Meet, the Redbirds romped to an easy victory over the other three teams. The highlight of this meet was Alton’s Wilbur Davis who pole vaulted 13 feet 2 inches, just missing the National High School mark of 13 feet 4% inches. Alton then played host to Soldan of St. Louis, the defending Missouri indoor champions. Alton ran away with this meet, winning 69-22. The Redbirds traveled to East St. Loius for another indoor meet, and came home with another victory 64-45. Alton ' s first big test was the Oak Park Relays. In a field of 34 teams, our Redbirds captured fourth place behind Phillips of Chicago, Highland, and Oak Park. Taking into consideration that Alton was the only school without indoor track facilities, this was an excellent showing. Alton opened its outdoor season by whipping East St. Louis 84-34. Alton then traveled to Belleville and was edged 60-58, but most of Alton’s stars were missingdue to the Decatur Open on the following day. In the Decatur Open, where thirty teams were entered, Alton sailed by the runner-up East St. Louis for an easy win 75 6 11-46. In the annual Hurst-Bush relays held in Carbondale, Alton again romped to victory defeating second place East St. Louis 79y 2 -40y 2 . Alton then played host to the Southwestern Conference Relays at Public Schools Stadium. In a two-sided battle Alton edged the East Side Flyers, 103 5 6-88, for their fourth consecutive victory in this meet. At the Normal Relays where more than ten teams were entered, our Birds again were on top scoring 81 points to the second place’s 391 2 Alton s Harriers traveled to East St. Louis to face the rival Flyers in the East St. Louis Invitational. In a very exciting finish, Alton nosed out the Flyers for a 106-78 margin. The Birds then competed in the Madison County Track Meet. With practically no opposition, Alton ran away with a 137 to 28% win. In the District Track Meet held at East St. Louis, Alton qualified ten individuals and two relay teams for the State Track Meet. Again East St. Louis was second best to our Birds as we won 69 to 39%. Our team then traveled to Urbana, Illinois, to compete in the Illinois State Track Meet. Again our boys did not let us down, as they tied lor third place with Highland Park. Only Phillips of Chicago and Moline could do anything against our strong team. Andrew Johnson of Alton won th e 180-yard low hurdles to pace Alton’s team. George (Peewee) Hunt captured second place in the 880 and our 880-yard relay team came in second place to aid our cause. The vastly improved Alton High Baseball team finished their 1962 season with a 10-11 record. Alton was off and running at the start. The Birds shut out Civic Memorial 6-0. They then pro- ceeded to win 9 and lose 9 before losing to Roxana, 6 to 4, in the district baseball tournament held at Alton. They were then edged 8 to 7 by Wood River in their final game. When the Birds opened the season, April 6, they began their domination of the area by blanking Assumption 10-0. They not only whipped Marquette twice, but went on to down Western Military, Collinsville, Centralia, Wood River, and Belleville. Assumption of East St. Louis was the only team to defeat — and only by a small margin — our powerful golf team. Yet the Redbirds bounced back by winning the next seven dual meets. Alton traveled to Quincy May 5, to participate in the Quincy Invitational. Flashing a hardhitting team, Alton pow- ered their way to a second place finish in a field of twenty-four teams. In a few weeks many of us must bid farewell to Alton High School and cross the theshold into the pathways of life. For many, graduation means a college education; for others, a well-paying job. Regardless of what may confront us in the future, Alton High will always hold a warm place in our hearts. During our years in high school, we have encountered many memorable experiences. We have gained new and valuable friendships and have engaged in useful and important organizations and activities. There have been moments of excitement, repose, chaos, despair, and happiness. There have been the feeling of loyalty and the spirit of challenge. High school is the means of educating our minds, developing our characters, and molding our bodies in such a manner that they will be productive for ourselves, our com- munity, and our country. The 1963 Tatler has attempted to capture and depict the many charac- teristics and events all of which are a part of our years in high school. We hope that through our efforts, each of you may be able to recapture your in- dividual experiences at Alton High. I would personally like to express my gratitude to the members of the 1963 Tatler Staff for the splendid job accomplished in producing the year- book. In behalf of the Tatler Staff, I would like to thank Mr. Dale Livengood, our advisor, for making the yearbook possible. Jim Crane, Editor-m-Chief 1963 Tatler Smile! We re on Candid Camera. But I don ' t want to take welding ! Quit looking at her legs, Kenny. Well, well, what have we here? This is your last warning; next time you’re caught sliding down the banisters, you ' ll have Butterfingers ! ! ! to suffer the consequences. Yep, I finally made an A!! fo Occi s4ctventc enA Again this year, we of the Tatler Staff wish to express our deepest appreciation for the willing and helpful cooperation shown by the advertisers. Without the splendid participation of our advertisers, the production of the Tatler would have been impossible. Thanks again” The 1963 Tatler Staff WE ' RE GOING WITH YOU Whether you know it or not, almost every day of your school year you ' ve used a product made by Olin Mathieson, orone thatOlin Mathieson helped to make. Once you ' re established in your life ' s work, you ' ll probably hear a lot more about Olin Mathieson. A good many of you may have business with us, and a few of you may even come to work for us. There wi 1 1 be room because Olin Mathieson is growing. When Olin Industries, Inc., merged with the Mathieson Chemical Corporation in August, 1954, they brought together the skills, facilities, and resources of two of the country ' s most rapidly ex- panding industrial organizations. We extend our best wishes to you. May the future bring you all you ' ve hoped for and everything for which you have worked.
