The school’s efforts are solely for the benefit of the students who attend. There is considerable time and money put into the program of the school. I feel that our students are interested in our program, proud of the school, and cooperate so that the efforts of all are not in vain. I am proud of our student body. Our students this year, on tours and trips, have made a favorable im- pression, not only for themselves, but for the entire school. Y ou, the students, have made this a good year. I can remember 1969-70 as one of the more pleasant years of school. Superintendent TUB SCHOOL BUNNIMS SMOOTHLY Dear Students: It has been my pleasure to be your principal at Alton the past four years. When I think of how fast time flies and how fast things are changing, I wonder what will come next. As youth of today work, think, and dream, we can be sure there is plenty of change in the offing. There are things with which you are not satisfied. Think seriously about these problems and decide what you should do about them. I am sure your answers will be new and different, but so will the world in which you have your careers, homes, families, and interests. I sincerely hope we have given you some help in making your decisions. _—Sincerely, Carl Williams Principal Mills and Mrs. Sizemore, better known as kool-aides, assist teachers and take of- fice correspondence. Tom Clary discusses his future plans with Mrs. Hufstedler. COUNCILOR f-TBLPC STUDENTS SELECT 7WEIR FUTURE. VOCATION Whenever a student goes to the counselor's office he can expect to wait in line. The counselor's office is vis- ited often by students who need help with college infor- mation and applications. Mrs. Hufstedler also adminis- ters tests and helps with social problems. Her friendly smile is always welcome, and she works hard to help stu- dents with their problems. The counselor's office contains a library of college catalogs and numerous pamphlets about job interviews, studying, etc. These pamphlets and college catalogs are very helpful and informative. Mrs. Hufstedler has helped many students make im- portant decisions about their future. Ann Boyd, Patti Fisher, and Charles Dallstream look over college catalogs. Mac Gum reads a pamphlet about job AS interviews. SCIENCE- OPENS THE DOOR, TO THE SECRETS OF UFE Modern science is standing on tiptoe, ready to open the doors of a golden age. Modern science is ready to open doors and the science department of AHS is standing on_its tiptoes to help students meet the challenges of a modern, scientific world. A large, well-squipped department offers students general science, biology, advanced biology, chemistry, ad- vanced chemistry, and genetics to help them pre- pare for the future. On Tuesday, March 10, the Annual H.S. Math- ematics Examination was given to math students and all other interested students. The purpose of this examination was to provide students with interesting, rewarding, and challenging problems that are with- in the realm of possibility for persons with back- grounds such as these students have. The student from AHS making the highest score on the examination was Phillip Colley. Students taking second and third places were Gary Dotson and James McGuire. Only one year of math is required at AHS, but wise students take as many math subjects as possible. They know that mathematics is a study in which a person must use his head in a logical pro- cess. The math classes offered at AH S are general math, Algebra I, Algebra II, geome- try, and trigonometry. All of these classes force a student to think for himself. Algebra II class listens as Mr. Hower gives the daily lecture. ENSUSW IS AN Mr. Wendell Williams, English I and citizenship instructor, finds literature quite enjoyable. English II class at study. Here at Alton High School the English language is studied in every phase. In order to accomplish this, the study of English is divided into two class- ifications; general English, which is an .over all study of all phases of English, and special or college pre- paratory English, English IV, which concentrates on developing those skills needed by students entering college. English classes in Alton High School prepare students to be pleasant, successful and informed by putting into their hands the tool on which their success and happiness will someday depend - the knowledge of the English language. PUBLICATIONS CiAQC ADDED to curriculum Publications Class hard at work. Patti Fisher and Debbie White type pages for the yearbook. Mike Dethrow and Barbara Cotton plan yearbook pages. Publications class, new to AHS, was an answer to the dream of the yearbook and paper staffs. Members of the class work diligently to meet deadlines. Sponsor, Mrs. Tinsley, worked equally hard in helping students to reach their goals. The paper staff worked exceptionally hard and created an outstanding paper. This year the paper was professionally printed, which gave it a new look. It received compliments from such publications as the STUDENT PRESS BULLETIN and the BETA CLUB JOURNAL. Several articles were reprinted in these publications. The paper staff members are as follows: Editor, Carolyn Brown; Assistant-Editor, Sandra Ogden; Business Manager, Esther Blankenship; Ronnie Jackman; Janet McNeely; Glenna Wheeler; Frances Wright; Cathy Watson; Kay Arnold; Doris Carter; Jim Dailey; Neda Campbell; Mary Hebrock; Dennis Rice. The yearbook staff worked very hard and added forty pages to this year's book. Much time was spent planning pictures and layouts. Members worked hard to sell ads and yearbooks in order to make this year's book the best ever. The end product of all this work is an outstanding publication that shows true ability and enthusiasm. AUTO UECHANICe FREFAREG BOG FOR. FUTURE JOBS Mr. Bartholomew examines a school bus to make sure it is in good condition. Bob Frey and Chester Taylor discuss the correct procedure in fix- ing the motor. George Owens is proud of his mechanic ability. Boys at AHS greatly appreciate the auto me- chanics program. This class, instructed by Mr. Bartholomew, acquaints boys with all phases of mechanics. The boys learn from experience by working on buses, cars, and trucks. The boys in auto mechanics are ready to step into jobs at the end of this course. They will always remember the good training they received in the auto me- chanics department at AHS. M-UCIC DEVELOPS MEW TALENTS AND ABfLTTTES The music department at AHS is an extensive department which provides students with an opportunity to develop and express their musical talents. The courses offered in music are chorus, girls' glee club, band, and fundamentals of music. In band, students play various instruments and various styles of music. They have selections in pop, jazz, overtures, and themes from Broadway musicals. Chorus and girls’ glee club also have a large selection of different types of music. Fundamentals of music is the study of composers, their works, and all basic knowledge of music, such as scales, notes, and keys. Chorus, girls' glee club, and band combined this year to present a Christmas cantata entitled, Love Transcending. FfNE ARTS DEVELOP fMDMDUALS Jr. High art class express themselves through painting. An outlet for self-expression is essential in the development of individuals. AHS is proud of its well equipped art department which features, among other things, a kiln and a potter's wheel. Modern Dance was offered for the first time this year at AHS. Dance as well as art provides a means of creativity and self-expression. Mr. Micheal Violett - art and dance instructor. Esther Blankenship performs a dance of her own creation. 29 BUCINEM EDUCATION FREPARE£ STUDENTS FOR BUSINESS ORIENTED WORLD Mr. Cook tellsmis general business class about the ing economy of the nation. AHS has an advanced business department which helps prepare students for future jobs. Mrs. Millsap works hard to help students learn the business courses they take. Typing I and II, shorthand, clerical practice I and II, secretarial practice II, and accounting are offered at AHS. The students in these classes learn to use various machines such as typewriters, adding machines, dictating machines, and duplicators. Mr. Cook teaches general business. The course includes a study of taxes, consumer problems, business organizations, transpor- tation systems, and communication systems. Students who have taken most of these courses feel prepared for a job. Many of them decide to go to college or a technical school for advanced training. These students always appreciate the good start they got in AHS business courses. Mrs. Millsap puts on dictation for the shorthand class 30 The shorthand class is trying very hard to take a letter at 80 words per minute. HISTORY BROADENS OUR UNDERSTANDING OF WORLD EVENTS Mrs. Gohn uses audio-visual aids to supplement her lectures. Mrs. Gohn advises students as they study in their groups. There is nothing that solidifies and strength- ens a nation like reading the nation’s history, whether that history is recorded in books, embodied in customs, institutions, and monuments. The Social Science Department of AHS offers a variety of courses which enable students to acquire a greater understanding of our country and the World. World history and American history, taught by Mrs. Gohn, help students to judge the future by teaching them of past events. Contemporary Issues, under the instruction of Mr. Lee Presley, keeps students informed about current world affairs. This year two American history pilot groups were introduced to the Inquiry Role Approach (IRA) teaching techinque. This approach, which is part of the Mid-Continent Regional Educational Laboratory, enables students as they use concepts to accept a specific role within a group of four people. The class room attempts to give the student an oppor- tunity to carry a responsibility comparable to the real life situation he will experience after school or beyond the classroom. 31 P. The intelligence and knowledge of a per- so i makes no difference if he does not have the physical strength to develop his mental capacity. AHS requires four years of phys- ical education and offers a wide variety of sports and skills to be gained while meeting the requirements. Basketball, baseball, track, softball, volleyball, tumbling, archery, and bad- minton courses are offered for boys. Girls choose from softball, volleyball, tumbling, archery, folk dancing, table tennis, and badminton. These and many other competitive sports develop students' abilities, as well as abilities to compete and get along with others. Boys' P.E. class doing warm-up exercises. TO M TOMOfcROW’S CHALLENGE. BOG LEARN ABOUT CARPENTRY IN BUILDING TRADES This is the modern, three-bedroom home the boys constructed this The boys work very hard to build the house and learn the fundamentals of carpentry. The boys who take Mr. Morris' building trades class learn the fundamental information needed in carpentry. This class helps prepare them for a future job. Many of them decide to obtain advanced training in this field. Each year the building trades class constructs a house. The school purchases the lot, provides the material, and hires the instructor. The boys in the class do the actual building. When the house is completed, it is advertised for sale, and the school accepts sealed bids. The money re- ceived from the sale of the house is then used to build another house the following year. This year the boys have built a three- bedroom, modern home with central heating. This is the fourth house the building trades class has built. It is located west of the high school. The highlight of the party was the crowning of Janet Shelton as Miss Santa Claus. The F. H. A. nominated Janet as their candidate from die Senior Class, and was later voted on by secret ballot. The caroling was enjoyed by all the students even though flashlights had to be used to read the music. Lester Jett and Janet Shelton began the dancing after refreshments had been served. Members of the older generation also enjoyed the dancing and fun. A huge Christmas tree in the background accents the scene, as Lester presents Janet with a beautifully wrapped gift. 117 VALENTINE'S DAY WAS SUCCESSFUL Mary Kay Tucker was the Science Club candidate. Beta Club sponsored Charlotte Williams. Debbie Guffey, chosen by the FFA, was elected as Miss Valentine. There were relay races before and a sock hop after the crowning. Activities were varied and the scene was funny for Valentine's 1970. Glenna Wheeler was FHA's Miss Valentine candidate. Mary Dallstream was chosen as Safety Club's candidate. The banquet was held in the high school cafeteria and the dance was held in the grade school gymnasium. The theme Three Coins in a Fountain was carried throughout the banquet with decorated napkins, favors, and programs. The grade school gymnasium was de- corated for the occasion with dim lights, music, and a gorgeous water fountain with its radiant shower of liquid diamonds spouting high into the air. As one gazed into the limpid pool his subconscious automatically drifted back to that Old Chestnut - Three Coins in a Fountain. With the toss of the coins, the fondest wish were to come true. In they went - and one found himself wishing the wonder- ful evening would never end. This was a magnificent evening that will long be remembered by all who attended. 'TWR££ COfMS fN A FOUMAIN” Ronnie Jackman and Debbie White enjoyed dancing at the Junior-Senior Prom. The band. Main Stream from Springfield, was a far-out singing group.
