HIS EXCELLENCY ALBERT R. ZUROWESTE D.D. BISHOP OF BELLEVILLE 2

Page 7 text:

Life begins: its doors open the way to happiness and sadness, contentment and un¬ rest. We run after life to make it our slave. We want time and all it has to offer. We want even to taste the flowers, the colors of life, and the sea. We want to smell the wind, the air, and love. Why are we not able to feel purple or taste green? Because we don’t give life a chance but think of it as a chance. It is true that at times life is gambled with and ill- treated; but this is all a part of life. What would life mean to anyone if it were dull and unimaginative? All men stand within the realm of chance. They have a chance to succeed and a chance to fail. Men formulate their own odds and gamble against them. It is man’s inborn nature to fall to temptation, the temptation is to take that calculated risk, the risk that so few take. But even worse than the loser is the person afraid to play the game. Today men strive for the perfect future and in so doing pass up their opportunity for the ideal present. They approach life timidly and afraid, constantly aware of their own well-being, not to be put down. We live not to die but to live. To merely exist would make you a tree; but even a tree can change. Trees shelter the unprotected. They grow and die. They multiply and feed th eir friends. But a tree does not love and a tree does not cry. Some people of the present wish to hear and see, they need to feel and taste, and they want to be able to cry. The time to live is the present. It is the time to start living the new life of individual¬ ism before it is too late. Leaders are bom today; while followers never live.
