The Queen was Donna Freeman and the King, also tri-captain of the football team, was Mark Bennett. After the King and Queen were crowned they and their attendants were driven around the entire field. Seven of the ten games were lost by only one touchdown and with more than thirty returning letterman, our hopes should be set high for the coming season. Preparation and conditioning for next season have already begun through the weight lifting program, and should continue through the summer. After six straight losses, the Altavista Bas- ketball Colonels suddenly jumped to their feet and became victors. Once defeating a competitor, it seemed as though the Colonels would not be stopped. The climax came when on January 25, the team went to Nelson County to play the unde- feated Governors. That night the Colonels caused the upset of the year--defeating the Governors! The Colonels ended the season with a 11-7 record and on their way to the tournaments. Coach Frazier motions to players on court. The race between Mr. Carter and Mr. Ford generated much local in- terest and discussion. A number of Altavista High School students participated actively in the cam- paign by distributing literature, urging people to vote, and working at the polls on Election Day. Through this involvement Altavista High School students learned an invaluable first hand lesson about the excitement of the Democratic process of electing officers. Clubs 65 The ASEIES: Annual Staff Back in the early spring of '76 the Yearbook Staff plunged into a year long job without an ad- visor, Under the guidance of Kenny Bolton the group experienced a profitable summer in selling ads. With Fall drawing closer the group had to settle down and begin thinking realistically about putting together a yearbook. Laura White became editor and Ran Coleman was assigned to the po- sition of head photographer. The new advisor Mr. Nemeth arrived and the time had come for some creative and hard work. Allison Dellinger, the one senior on the staff, displayed her talent in the majority of the artwork for the book. The rest of the staff worked page by page to put the book together. Section heads were: Michele Martin, Cindy Dowdy, Karen Whitely, Ramona Campbell, Bar- bara Francis, Allison Dellinger, and Rusty Hicks, Other staff members were: Lisa Johnson, Tamara Treadway, Susan Callahan, Charlotte Jones, Dwayne Blakenship, Susan Byrd, Jeff White, Linda Mattox, Sherry Melton, Kathy Ritzer, and Robin Jacobs. Photographers were: Alfred Albiston, Darryl Burkes, and Teddy Ferguson. Laura is HOPPIN mad! Temper! Temper! Temper! UsING New Vo. TEcH. A dream becomes a reality. ' These are the opening words in the Campbell County Vo. Tech handbook, This reality benefits our school this year for the first time. The Campbell County Vo- cational Technical Educational Center is designed to prepare students for employment imme- diately after graduation from high school. Mainly Juniors and Sen- iors enroll in the offered courses and their transportation is pro- vided during the school hours. Credits are received for the courses taken. The Vo. Tech. Center provides many advantages for students at A.H.S. and it also provides great possibilities of expansion for the future. t 68 Clubs Clubs 69 70 te 4 We y, uy Vi 4p ONS VE GOT... g fy 4 4 Y hy | Vo 4, 4s by . ay Wj “fe 71 Harold K. It was our first day at A.H.S. By the time we got used to having lockers and changing classes it was time for Homecoming. Linda Farthing and Cybil Moss were chosen as our Homecoming attendants to represent our class. The weeks were filled with homework, J. V. Foot- ball practice, peprallies, and J. V. Basketball prac- tice. We were well represented in sports throughout the school year. Now as the year draws to an end we look back on all the hard work and fun. We realize that we will undergo many more adventures and we look forward to these with even more enthusiasm. WER. We have become outgoing in sports, cheerleading, and other organizations as well. In sports we have participated in Varsity and J. V. football, J. V. basketball, and J. V. volleyball. We have also shown spirit by having five of the six J. V. football cheerleaders lead in a few of the spirit-filled pep rallies , The Class of '80 has about ten members on the Annual Staff, including Ran Coleman, pho- tography editor. In the field of academics our class was honored when Jennifer Giles won first place in the essay contest, ''What the Bicentennial Year Meant to Me. The Class of '80 is an out- going class. Animals that once were real, sit lifeless on the chairs No more cuddles, no more hugs, just clear and empty stares. Memories are all that's left of shovel- sandbox days Of party dresses, mud pie messes, other childish ways. Broken crayons, bits and pieces: used by first-grade artist Remembering to stay within the lines was always hardest. Boys were creeps who pulled your hair and called you nasty names But now they've changed and all insist on playing different games. No more ribbons tied in bows, no more frilly pinafores Things have changed and nothing seems the way it was before. We have be- come Juniors, one step from the top. We look back and see that there is a lot be- hind us and even more ahead of us. We have much more responsibility. After all, the Juniors are in charge of Prom: mak- ing the money, choosing the band, the decorating, and the cleaning up. There are the satisfactions and also the disap- pointments. But looking at it, the satis- factions out number the disappointments. You can look at sports: football, bas- ketball, and baseball teams hada_ high number of Juniors. Look at the others: track, golf, tennis, softball, girls’ bas- ketball, and volleyball. They all had their share of Juniors. Then look at the academnic side. Memories may be beautiful and yet what's too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget. And it's the laughter we will remember whene ver we re- member the way we were. Each year a class graduates and leaves behind some hidden power that keeps the other classes striving to reach the top. As graduation night for the class of '77 rapidly approaches, we wish to leave behind a memory of all the good we have contributed to Altavista High. We wish to be remembered as the mixing pot class; for truly we are 144 mixtures of fun, laugh- ter, brains, brawn, evil and good. For 12 long years we have played together, fought together, worked together and struggled to reach the top--and now we are here. WE began as a class full of eager, young and unknowing 8th graders. We leave as young men and women; a little more experienced, but still eager. It is now that we must leave the security of our homes, our school and our friends. We must journey outward and face new friends and use the knowledge, love, experience, and wisdom we have gained during our high school years. Yes, it's the laughter we will remember, whenever we, the class of 1977, re- member the way we were.
