The team was formed so that the eigth grade girls interested in playing Var- sity next year could get the ex- perience of being on an organ- ized team. Most of the girls were un- experienced, and this was the first time they had played on an organized team. There were no fixed posi- tions, and Coach Bryant played them where he thought they — would play best. This issue of the Nuntius in the Bicentennial Year of our nation makes it a very special publica- tion. The 1976 edition of the Nuntius reflects one year in the lives of students and the events of Altavista High School. The Spirit of 76 reflects the lives of Americans over two centuries. One of the distinguishing features of the first 200 years in the United States has been the development in the growth of its public education. Statesmen, such as Washington and Jeffer- son, early in our history saw the need for an enlightened citizenry in order to protect, nurture, and advance the freedoms expressed in our Constitution. The United States faces many problems. Even with our great wealth and prosperity we recognize that our security is under con- stant threat. We observe the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and our own nation and we are aware of the gathering storm which threat- ens our continued existence. Our magazines, newspapers, and tele- vision are filled with accounts of crime, political corruption, violence, riots, and demonstra tions. Yet when an outstanding student wins a scholarship, displays exceptional skill, or performs a humanitarian act, it rarely makes news. Americans have faced many challenges and have been more than equal to the occasion. The American public school system has contributed greatly to the successes of this nation in meet- ing these challenges. The young people in this school and in the many other schools of our land are the greatest resources we possess. Let us all rededicate ourselves to a renewal of faith, to equality, and to justice. What our forefathers envisioned we must work to full fill! At prospects of not having an ad- visor for the '76 year, a small, previously selected staff began after school ended last year, to sell ads in order to raise yearbook funds. Before long, their bank account began to rise, a yearbook room was des- ignated, and their previous ad- visor, Mr. Roger Heffelfinger, resumed his job with the staff. Most of their funds were drained when the need for a darkroom arose. Witha little black paint and other equipment, the staff photographers managed tocre- ate a sufficient darkroom. The staff sponsored a dance after the last home football game, and managed to gain back a portion of their money, andwith some innovative ideas and clos- er attention paid to their work, they have also saved. The staff hopes this year's book is one for everybody to be proud of and are glad to presént it to you . Support Your Local Advertisers, They’re Supporting Us. Le ife goes on. In the span of fifty years we can see change and progress, but we can also recognize that students interest have remained the same. So the yearbook has made an effort to tie the events of our school that have been re- corded by the NUNTIUS into one anniversary package. However; this special edition may not. have been possible without the assistance of Mr. Jim Funderburk, photographer at THE POR- TRAIT PLACE. He was able to reproduce prints for us out of the original yearbooks, and for his extra time and effort, we are grateful. We slso — thank Reggie Bennett for his assistance to our. own staff photographers. We now close witha wish for 50 more prosperous years for the NUNTIUS.
