CLASS HISTORY The Class of '74 has finally reached the top! We've come a long way since as eighth-graders we were looked down upon by all the upperclassmen. We faced the challenge of adapting to a new way of life - high school life, and now we'll soon be facing a new challenge - college or career. As freshmen, our science classes made our famous trip to the Chatham Plane- tarium, much to the horror of Mrs. Scott. Two of our classmates, Bob Gober and Dennis Catron, were members of our football team - the 1970 Region III Champions. Finally we hit the center of our stay at A.H.S. As sophomores, our one most well-remembered class was biology with Miss Phillips. We learned the skill of note-taking, dissection, and cramming for those tests. The Washington trip is one we'll never forget. Our junior year meant touring Willamsburg with ''Mama Hicks, ordering class rings, college boards, magazine sales, and the Junior-Senior Prom. We have Mr. Dudley to thank for making our Prom a success, with his help on those hectic days of decorating. We didn't think we would be ready on time, but on Sat- urday night everyone was ''Dancing in the Moonlight to the House of Commons' music. We also succeeding in driving two of our three English teachers we had that year away from the school forever. They couldn't take that sixth period class. Finally we became Seniors! It still doesn't seem possible. We're watching A.H.S. change with the world with quarterly grading periods and our choice of different English and History classes each quarter. Danny Marsh and head cheer- leader Babs Barnard were our Homecoming King and Queen. Now we look forward to Class Night and finally graduation and goodbye to Altavista High. Drumheller Principal Altavista High School Dear Sir: On the night of Friday, October 26th, while broadcasting the action of the football game between the Altavista High School Colonels, and the Brookville Bees, Dave Freer of radio station WLLL and I had the opportunity to observe: one of the finest groups of young athletes that I can recall. I refer to the 19 or 20 young men who comprised the Colonels team that night and who did such a valiant job of representing their, high school, even though in a losing effort. This group deserves every accolade of praise, every bit of SuphORS and every superlative in the EnglishJanguage to describe their competitive spirit and dedication. They are deserving of every show of pride which can be garner - ed from students, faculty, parents and townspeople in Altavista. Late in the game, though they were numerically out-numbered and hopeless- ly out-scored, they broke from the huddle and executed their plays with a SPE seldom exhibited by young men today. After the game, I went to the locker room to express these: sentiments in person but, unfortunately, most of the players were dressed and gone. I did seek out your coach, Mr. Mike Head, to congratulate him for his part in instilling in the team a character which will serve them well, long after - their high school playing days are over. My own two sons have performed on championship teams but my inner pride at their accomplishments was certainly not exceeded by the feeling I have now for the Altavista Colonels, I hope that you will convey my sentiments to your team and express to them _ that even in a losing season they are winners. In closing, I wish to thank you for the hospitality and cooperation of your office in helping us set up for our broadcast, and hope that continued community support will once again bring the Altavista Colonels the enimemce they deserve. Sincerely, Charles R.
