Glass, Of] Looking back over five years of school days we see that “We've come a long way baby.” So have been the years of triumph, work, occasional setbacks, and more work. What have we done that has made the Class of ’71 so unique? Beginning that first day in the eighth grade when we were so sure of getting lost, to that day when we re- ceived our diplomas, our high school years have been packed with many memories. In the eighth grade we all visited the planetarium at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The tenth grade took us to Washington to tour the Smithsonian and other historical landmarks. Finally, our junior year pitted Mr. Peak and us against the “wilds” of Jamestown and the splendor of Williamsburg. As you can see, we were a traveling class! Our Senior year began formally when we received those long awaited class rings. So many activities followed! Dianne Hughes was crowned 1970 Football Homecoming Queen and Denis Tweedy was chosen as her King. Invi- tations have been ordered and all await that day in June when we become the newest alumni of Altavista High School. Our athletic powers have been a stable occurrence over the years as well. Beginning in 1968-69 the Altavista Col- onels basketball team went to the State Semi-finals Championship in Charlottesville taking along our own ‘71 classmate David Mason as a first ne player. The following year 1969-70, Dennis Tweedy, Thomas Moon, Robert Mitchell, Vernon Barnard, and Wilson Reynolds made All-District. Our team was undefeated that year. In the year 1970-71, again Dennis Tweedy, Thomas Moon, and Vernon Barnard made All-District. Our team was not only number “1” in the district, but we were regional champs and surely no one will forget the day we trav- elled to Gate City to play the semi-final game in the state series. However, our school life has been more than just a series of football and basketball games. It has been a time of Powe and learning. Learning Dae what’s in a book, ut learning about life. The life we’ll face as young adults in our world of tomorrow. Top: President Dianne Hughes and Vice President Terry Arthur. Bottom: Treasurer Steve Kennedy and Secretary Katherine Franklin.
