It is within these walls that we have many opportunities open to us. Whether we take advantage of these opportunities or whether we pass them by, whether we make the most of our years in school or whether we lust try to eke by, is totally our deci- sion. High school like life is what we as individuals make it. Because we live in such rapidly changing times, our decisions are even more crucial to our success in the fu- ture than ever before. HIGH WAY AND A LOW To everyman there openeth A way, and ways, and a way. And the high soul climbs the high way And the low soul the low. And in between, on the misty flats, The rest drift to and fro. But to everyman there openeth A high way and a low And every man decideth The way his soul shall go. MR. DRUMHELLER ASSUMES NEW LEADERSHIP Noted and admired for so many years as an outstanding football coach, Mr. Harold Drumheller assumed a new position on a new field — principalship at Altavista High School. With equal success he handled the many transitional administrative problems with as much poise as he has shown in the past. With characteristic confidence and ef- ficiency, he began the school year seeking to unite students and faculty for the goal of building responsible citizenship. With a frantic search for stu- dent writing, the staff managed to pull through each time with an unbelievable piece of work. The publications are supposed to show student opinions, ideas, and talents; however, fewer and fewer students each year take the time to submit their work in writing. They sponsor a Bloodmobile in the summer, a Toy Dance at Christmas and Assembly before the holiday. This year they have held devotions on the intercom every Monday. The club each year works toward the highest award of the Hi-Y Clubs, they try to achieve the Ace Award. The Clubs send members to the Virginia Model General Assembly where they assume the roles of Virginia's Delegates and representa- tives. Each year they also celebrate National Hi-Y week and sponsor special activities each day of that week. SENIOR TRI-HI-Y Row 1, L. toR.: J. Dalton, B. Burgess, M. Tucker, C. It’s reportedly the only number combination that is the same thing upside down as right side up; which gives rise to several connotations, all well known and born with good nature by us Seniors. But now it's time to look back and view our high school days. Eighth grade saw a class of kids anticipating all the privileges of high school . . . we were cool and the Seniors were held in no particular awe. . . well, that’s not quite true! The ‘eighth grade” dance and trip to Chapel Hill were the usual highlights of the year. The freshman year came ‘round, we had settled down to the old routines and best of all we had someone to criticize — the new 8th graders. We worked hard on the homecoming float at Linda Sandidge's house but as before and as would happen our Sophomore year, our float was dis- qualified. Sophomore class and nearing our goal! ‘The highlight of the year was the trip to Washington, D. C. The train ride up was particularly inspiring for the girls as there were carloads of young sol- diers who claimed they hadn't seen a female “in months’'!’ As Juniors we could look forward to the best of 4 years of school. Taking 2nd place for our float was a relief. Anyone who sits for hours making hundreds of Kleenex carnations deserves Ist place! Rings were ordered and plans made for the Junior-Senior Prom which proved to be the biggest fake-off of the year. While the Seniors of '68 stood on the gym roof and hummed the supposed theme song | Love Is Blue,’ we decorated for ‘Kiss Me Good-Bye.’’ A complete shock and big success resulted. Three Juniors celebrated Prom night at the State Debate where they cap- tured second and third place honors with the help of Robbie Gibson. The annual trip to Williams- burg was such a success that 4 Juniors couldn't bring themselves to leave Jamestown and in turn were left there! Seniors. . . and we started the year with a bang! We are undisputedly the class with the most spirit, having won first place for our float and the football megaphone for the entire year. Christ- mas again brought a top performance. Mrs. Andrew and Mrs. Hawley’s home rooms reached a deadlock in the contest over who could collect the most food for the Christmas baskets. The Class of '69 is great! Our nicknames are funny but not really appropriate. . . because any class that is as good upside down as right side up is remarkable and that's just what we are! C.
