THE ANNUAL STAFF ALTAVISTA HIGH SCHOOL irginia V; J ista Altav Dedication The Senior Class of Altavista High School is honored to dedicate the Nuntius to ateacher for whom we have the greatest respect. Shehas been a trusted friend, an inspiring force in trying times, anda companion in whom we all would confide. Her sincere personality and unfailing good humor have enriched our lives. For her constant effort in our behalf, we do dedicate the Nuntius of 1961 to Mrs. Wallace Andrew. Mrs. Wallace Andrew Introduction Your high school yearbook is the story of a school year. It captures some of the atmosphere and spirit of the school. As the years pass, the yearbook becomes a cherished treasure, frequently used to recall some of the fun and happiness of school days. As we look through the annual, memories come flooding back, not only the memories which have been recorded there, but also those we could never recapture with a camera. We will remember the friendly bustle in the halls as students, hurrying to the next class, stopping to speak to friends; the long line in the cafeteria where everyone has plenty of time to discuss the latest events; the cheering and exhilaration after our tcam has scored; andthe times when some patient teacher helped us with our work on her own time. Now we invite you to recapture with us the events of the school year of 1960-61 through the eyes of ''The Colonel. FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION aN TET me Mr. Frank P. Cline Mr. J.J. We entered a float in the Homecoming Parade. In November we gav e a three-act- comedy, ''Which Shall He Marry ? ' As money-making projects, we have sold light-bulbs and name labels; we have also given a dance and sponsored a talent show. Nov, at the end of our years at Altavista High School, we are looking forward to the Senior Banquet, Class Night, Baccalaureate Sermon, Graduation, and our Senior trip. We sponsored a dance at Thanksgiving to help raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom. In addition to this, the float we entered inthe Homecoming Parade won first prize. We gave a play the last of March, the proceeds of which, along with the money we received for first prize in the Homecoming Parade, gave us even more backing for the Prom. The Junior-Senior Prom itself, which was our biggest undertaking of the year, was the night of April 28. Even though it was a lot of hard work, no one complained, and everyone enjoyed it. 25 Paulette Anthony ad Donald Bailey Lawrence Bell Carolyn Arthur Mary Barbour Drew Blanchard 26 Donna Arthur Paul Barbour Evelyn Bowling Jerry Brown Kenny Bryant Carolyn Burnette Neva Bus Sylvia Callahan Mike Carr Edward Cox Stuart Cox, Jr. Dale Cox PET | Jimmy Davis James Dickerson Roy Dodson Barbara Doss Phyllis Dowdy Charles Edwards Thomas Emerson Patricia Eubank Walter Feather N Johnny Ferris Sharon Grau Billy Haynes John Fitzgerald Evelyn Hall Wayne Hedrick 29 Susan Frazier Charlotte Hansley Judy Hogan Y Bobby Howell Hugh Hoyle Linda Johnson Carrie Keatts Warren Keesee Roger Lewis Roberta Marr Linda Mayhew Randy Miller 30 Linda Painter Wyatt Pickeral Buddy Shively Billy Peerman Pat Puckette Ann Short 3] Kirk Perrow Grady Pugh Bobby Simpson Kelly Smith Jerry Sodosky Larry Sodosky Claudia Sturtevant Sue Taylor Freddie Tucker Barbara Tweedy Judy Walker Kitty Waller 32 Sylvia Walters Nancy Woodson Barbara Worsham Donna Worsham Coleen Yeatts Nadine Yeatts Brenda Young 334. The eighth grade science classes went on a trip to Moorehead Plane- tarium at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill on December 3, 1960. We sawtheir spec- ial Christmas program and took a tour of the campus. The eighth grade boys and girls organized basketball teams and playednearby schools. We also had a party on March 3, 1961, which was a great success. 45 } , ¥ 7 ; - a on ee Lynn Andrew Gail Arthur Jason Arthur Lin Arthur Swanson Atkins a ee Cynthia Barbee Luella Barrett Bubber Bohannon Kathy Bragg Travis Bragg WL La Louis Bryant Brenda Burnette Frances Burnette Richard Burnette Richard Carter Charles Catron Shelby Clay i Robert Cox Ross Cox Barbara Craddock Pam Creasy Sara Creasy Vicki Creasy Mary Pat Crews David Crouch Carolyn Dalton Patrick deBernard James Dowdy Steve Dowdy Edward Dudley Dale Eades Martha Farmer Johnny Farthing Norma Franklin Hank Frazier Patricia Frazier Ronnie Gill Billy Gillispie Danny Hale Carlton Hall Richard Johnson Dianne Lambert Lucille Maddox Connie Hancock he Barbara Jones Laura Lancaster Stanley Maschal Rheta Hargis Brenda Hughes | re ae WJ Carolyn Jenks Kenneth Keesee Connie Lane Brenda Mason Terry Kelly Sheila LeBert Linda Mays Dale Kirby Glenn Logwood Mike Mays Vincent Moorefield Robert Moss Tommy Neal Judy Noell Mike Owens Patricia Owen Laura Patterson Biily Prebble Lida Pribble Laverne Richardson David Shackleford John Searcy Harriet Shields Bobby Singleton Chip Smith Heidi Smith George Smith Lynda Smith Jimmy Stanfield Susan Sutherland Eddie Thacker Julia Via George Wilson Shirley Wright Becky Thornhill Sandra Walters James Wilson Danny Tucker 50 Robert Tunkel Sheila Watlington Lawrence Wilson Frank Tweedy Carl West John Woodson Cecelia Young LEATURES Dot Keesee HOMECOMING KING AND QUEEN 52 Johnny Justice = ie Wise se ee , — Hh Rg $28 Queen's Court Suzanne English. 3rd row: Dixie Tunkel, Margaret lst row: Heidi Smith, Terry Hogan, Terry May- Yeatts. 4th row: Claudia Sturtevant, Barbara Tweedy. hew, Mary Pat Crews. 2nd row: Kay McCormick, 5throw: Phyllis Ramsey, Dot Keesee, Ashby Coleman.
