EX LIBRIS THE NUNTIUS NINETEEN ELON Roe se Aes is Te tee aaa We the Class of ‘42, have followed the custom of those older and wiser ones who have pre- sented each year at Altavista High School a book recording the school life of that year. Each book has represented a link in a chain that binds together memories of our high school life, never to be forgotten. Our class has now added the ninth link to this golden chain of memories. In this link we have tried to put everything of interest that has hap- pened during the year of 1941-'42. If the strength of the link added by the Class of 1942 is doubted, judge by reading the following pages. To the students of A. H. 8S. we, the editorial staf, present themnimth link? of the sNuntuc. Farewell to our dear old school, From which we now depart. And our greatest thanks to the faculty, From the depths of all our hearts. We will miss our friends and classmates, Whom we've known so long a time. And we'll hope that in the future, Each one, his goal will find. We've accomplished many things, Willing to do our part, And though we leave this school, From those traits we will never depart. We will always remember our good times, That we have had there, in the past. And we'll not stop fighting for knowledge, Till we've reached our goal at last. So goodby to all our teachers, With the ones who helped us through. And to our dear old high school, We bid you all “adieu.” PALIN Wee Mo Cre oer leh OnG ok NAME WEATHER| SENIORS HOROSCOPE LAST SEEN DISLIKES 10 YEARS FROM NOW Rachel Andrews Fair Working for Mr. Mac Men Giving guitar lessons Aiding Wayne in running the Ruth Anthony Calm Practicing Shorthand Bossy people library Working at a filing cabinet, but Loma Brooks Clear With June and Gertrude Being short standing on a box Superintendent of the Blue Jess Burgess Unsettled Leaving school The mill Ridge Rayon Mill Lewis Barnard Stormy Captain of football team Sissies Coaching football at Notre Dame A famous center fielder on the James Bennett Cloudy Being sent out of class Quietness Yankee team Paige Clanton Mild With Calvin Girls A famous “young” doctor Running father’s general mer- Calvin Carter Hail Throwing things at S. Quarles Biggest eaters................ Hazel Crawford and Tommy Holt Time Marches On N September, 1938, we received our promotion to a higher position in the business of learning. It seems only yesterday and yet it has been four long years of happiness, work, and fellowship with one another. The day we entered high school was one to be remembered. We were a large class and it seemed as though we couldn’t all find seats that morning. Each one was talking of what he wanted to do in the future. The sun was shining in the windows and we were all so proud of ourselves. We undertook the task of completing a job to enable us to do better work in our life, but it took sometime for us to put away our childish acts which were out of place in high school. This new position offered us not only new knowledge and learning, but also a chance to acquaint ourselves with problems of everyday life, associations with individuals, and a chance to develop ourselves into industrious citizens. I guess we worried the teachers those first few weeks, because it seemed impossible for us to get our classes straight. Instead of going into freshmen classes we always went into junior or senior classes; but soon we settled down and passed our tests and examinations with good grades, and then our thoughts turned to the good times we would have in our Sophomore year. We were sorry though that some had to leave school, because we had wanted to go through school in one big group. We went to our Sophomore year to complete another step. We now realized the full meaning of loyalty, politeness, courtesy, studiousness, bravery, cooperation, and willingness to do our part. We had by this time gotten used to the routine of high school life, and we had also learned how to master our problems. Some of us began working on week-ends, and we were very industrious in keeping up with our school work as well as our outside work. We had begun by this time to work out our own questions and master them. Our advisors, so far, had given much of their time in giving us a start in our job and now in our third year, we were under way in performing our jobs. We had begun to learn the full meaning of loyalty, earnestness, studiousness and other good traits which we had attained. Of course, we had to be corrected for our faults sometimes but we didn’t hesitate to right them. We just kept forward with firm wills and made up minds. We were all very good in our tasks except for a few mischievous ones, who had not yet awakened to their problems. We did much to help others that year, and we tackled harder jobs and problems than we had ever attempted. We gave a dance for the seniors that year with the help and advice of our teacher, Miss Simmons. In our last year, we tried to gain all of the knowledge possible. We entered into things which were new to us. We asked about problems which we wished to understand and tried to review in our minds the knowledge that we had obtained. Although a war has interrupted our progress, we will keep going because we know that it is essential to be good learned American Citizens at our Country's demand at a time such as this. We will tread forward with our minds more firm than before and with a steadier step. We mean to do our part for our country and make ourselves worth while in future years. 17 NAG EAN WOES IE deh Cush Sen jal OROML ANS The Senior Play A three-act comedy entitled “Home Was Never Like This” was presented by the Senior Class on Friday night March 27, 1942 Time: The present. S. and the citizens of this community. The teams also showed greater sportmanship and were very successful in their attempts to put Altavista on the top. The football team won five out of eight games. Three trophies have been added to our trophy shelf this year by the wonderful playing of the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. The boys won the county championship this year. They won twelve out of fifteen games. The girls’ team was successful, too, winning nine out of thirteen games. In a tournament held during the first week of March, both Altavista teams won runner-up cups. We hope that next year will produce as great athletic teams as this year has.
