It's early back to school to go, Thinking of the swimmin’ hole— Of brooks an' streams whet waters flow, An’ the idle fishinT pole. Fond memories of a past vacation To a busy mind still cling, As the heart records a strange sensation Whene’er, the schoolbells ring. . . . O. The sound of the bell brings varied reactions to those who hearken; some answer the sound only half-heartedly, regretting that vacations are ending; others rejoice, looking forward to the pleasure of renewed friend- ships, seeking to uncover knowledge and the answers to the innumerable questions of youth, striving for goals that are often just out of reach, but worthy of every effort. Throughout the school year, as bells ring out for class- es, tests, study halls, clubs, ballgames, and parties, stu- dents grow both physically and mentally. For thirty-eight years, since its f ou n d in g in 1922, Altamahaw Ossipee school bells have been a source of pride and joy to the community. We, the staff of the 1960 TOMAHAWK, seek to give to you in the following pages a review of this year and its highlights. O. students who look back at their elementary school days recall vivid memories of two outstanding teach- ers. Their willingness to listen, their patience with every small problem, and their ability to direct and mold young minds have endear- ed them to the hearts of hundreds of boys and girls. Therefore. We Dedicate the 1960 TOMAHAWK to Mrs. Lois McAdams Bost and Mrs. Gene Brown Cothran who for more than twenty years each have devoted their lives and services teaching the youth of the Altamahaw Ossipee School. School affairs are ably administered by an energetic and farsighted school board and principal whose tireless efforts make A. O. a school of which we are all proud. Mrs. Jean W. Students feel that the council is both their agent of expression in the school and their connection with the administration. In all areas of student activity the council has the full support of the administration. Planned meetings are held weekly, supervised by an advisor who is enthusiastic about the council’s activities and is trained in the philosophy and techniques of student council work. The main ob- jective of the Student Council is to promote leadership and to practice accepted democratic principles and its operation. No happier bell is heard than one heralding the election of a student to an honored position on the council. Staff members serve in every capacity-from typist to salesman, in order to pro- duce a year book, which covers practically every activity that has occurred during this year in the Altamahaw-Ossipee School. Choosing a theme, planning lay-outs, taking pictures, selling ads, typing and putting the final touches to art work and copy keeps the staff busy. The sound of the bell at the close of the period often finds staff members still hard at work. Faye Woody Mrs. Sadler Advisor BuS As a means of informing the students as well as the public of the school activities, the students of Al- tamahaw-Ossipee High School publish a monthly news- paper, the Hub. In addition to keeping us up to date on high school events, it carries a page concerning the happenings in the elementary grades. Representatives on the Hub staff come from grades seven through twelve and each person has a specific duty to perform in gathering news, preparing it for publication, proofreading copy, and distributing it to students, teachers and alumni of the school. No more welcome bell is heard on the A. O. campus than the one announcing publication of the Hub. Eloise Apple, Associate Editor; Miss McArthur, Advisor; Brenda Moore, Editor.
