The responsibility of getting boys and girls to school on sunny days, rainy days and, sometimes, on snowy days lies on the shoulders of a capable crew of well- trained bus drivers. Answering telephones, running errands,’typing, filing and mimeographing are all a part of the day's work for seniors who elect to assist in the principal's office. At the same time they gain valuable experience in office practices. Office Assistants Left to Right: Pete Barker, Billy Alcon, Ethel Ring, Jerry Garrison, Carolyn Terrell, Larry Sherrill. One of the most coveted honors at A-O is election to the Student Council, which serves as a governing body for the activities of clubs and classes as well as assisting in the administrative policies necessary for making each day run smoothly. Members of the Student Council operate a concession stand at athletic events, direct fire drills, raise and lower the flag, hold an annual Christmas dinner for all students, direct student parties and assist as requested by the faculty in the daily activities of the schoolr Page 36 mm. Students who have lettered in some sport become eligible for membership, subject to approval of the Athletic Council. Tapping ceremonies are held twice a year and those tapped go through a formal initiation. Monogram Club members operate a student store, using the proceeds for athletic projects. An athletic banquet in the spring is sponsored by the club, and members work toward a goal of better sportsmanship as they participate day by day in sports.
