WE WERE THE SENIORS OF NINETEEN FORTY NINE “Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time.” We walked again and again on the Peaceful paths of Altamahaw-Ossipee. We walked during the closing days of war, through day of high prices, and through the upsetting years of ’48 headed by Harry Truman. Through wind and rain, mud and dust, snow and ice, sunlight and moonlight, we forced our path around this citadel of knowledge. Many footprints grew dim, others disappeared completely. We walked in search of laughter and the joy of living. We partici- pated on successful basketball and baseball teams; realized the school’s first football team; enjoyed a full time music teacher. We danced and ate at parties and banquets; demonstrated our skill, beauty, and talents on the stage, on the air, and on May Day. We showed our love for Alma Mater by leaving a $500 gift to her. We listened to your ringlin bells—to the roar of your buses—to the music and noise of your happy folk. We waited in line for food, com- plained about Prunes, begged for larger servings. We critized, laughed, and cried, but we continued to grow and make footprints. From these happy paths we begin to blaze new trails. Who knows but, that our feet might lead to the high places. Regardless of the size, the direction, or the distance our footprints take, our journey started here YESTERDAY, flourshed TODAY, and continues TOMORROW. 19 K- Doris Barker
