E'xecut1ve Offlcer Stoddard Page Hancock COMMANDER, USNR Commander Hancock, a native of Brooklyn, New k raduated from the University of North Caro- Yor , g lina QAB in Journalism, in 1938. After stints with h N W York Worlds Fair and as a junior engineer t e e in Pittsburgh, he enlisted in the Navy V-5 program in July 1941. After a short period of elimination ' ' th V-7 OCS flight training, he was transferred to e and was recalled to active duty 1n January 1942. Commissioned an Ensign in May 1942, Comman- l8 months as boat captain of PT 74 operating in the Aleutian chain. He then took command of the LCI KX, 787, a light freight carrier for 18 months in the Pacific. He also saw duty as Staff operations officer and first Lieutenant of the DD788 for a brief period before being released to de r Hancock served inactive duty in December 1946. In October 1950, Commander Hancock was re- called to active duty and assigned to Operations De- partment in the Office of Chief of Naval Operations. From there he went as assistant Plans and Opera- tions Officer at CSCNfCHSA Know Naval Activities Naples, Italy, for two years, after which he was assigned to ALTAIR. Commander Hancock holds the American Defense Medal, American and Pacific Theater Medals, Phil- lippine Occupation Medal, WWII Medal, Naval Re- Serve Medal Q10 Years, and the National Defense Medal. Commanding Officer Edgar S.PoWell, Jr. CAPTAIN, USN A graduate of the Naval Academy, Class of 1934, Captain POWELL has en- joyed a varied and distinguished naval career. Prior to World War II Capt. POWELL served aboard the USS MARY- LAND and the USS AUGUSTA, the latter on tour on the China Station for two and one half years. At the outset of WWII he was aboard the destroyer USS HUGHES. The HUGHES participated in the North Atlantic patrol before sailing to join the battle in the Pacific. Later he took command of the USS BALDWIN QDD 6241 which operated in the Atlantic and took part in the invasion of Normandy. ' In the fall of 1949 Capt. POWELL attended the Armed Forces Staff Colle ge, ln June of 1951 he received a Masters degree in public administration from Ohio State University. Returning to sea duty he assumed command of Destroyer Division 162. The next tour found Capt. POWELL in the Bureau of Naval Person- nel as head of the Enlisted Distribution Branch. It was under his guidance that the SEAVEY-SHORVEY system was de - veloped. Capt. POWELL holds the SilverStar Medal and French Croix de Guere with silver star for combat action during the Normandy Invasion. He also holds nu- merous other campaign ribbons withi en- gagement stars for service throughout World War II.
