Scholars Face Rigorous Competitions Sterling Scholars competed in twelve dif- ferent areas ranging from foreign language to visual arts. School finalists in each disci- pline competed at region judging, and re- gion finalists went on to state competition. Sterling Scholars attributed their successes to many things: Joey Anderson inspired in me the de- sire to learn about literature and journalism and taught me values of expression. stat- ed English scholar Ben Valerio. I have a strong desire to succeed after high school and I knew that doing well in high school would help me in my future life. said Brett Duckworth. Unlike the individual Sterling Scholar competition, the Academic Decathalon Team was based on team effort. Students were tested in ten areas of academic knowledge. Alta placed second in the first year of competition at the District level. All team members earned high individual awards. Rachel Carter was the school’s top scorer placing second overall.
