Underclassmen Football All Score Victories Just one step from varsity foot- ball. the Hawk J.V. team finished the season with a 4-3 region record. “We had a goal at the beginning of the season for a winning record. They had only won two games be- fore this season, and this year they won four,” stated J.V. Coach Gar- cia. The sophomore region champs. Alta, gained respect all year long, especially with a victory over a tough Brighton team which sported a 137 game winning streak. “The thing about this team is that they got better every game. It was a team effort, they were unselfish, and The Hawk defense was able to stop a Moun- tain View Bruin on the goal line. they showed it in their record. commented Coach Holladay. Alta’s freshmen showed how they are continuing the trend of a high school football power. “The game against Jordan was our biggest vis- tory, because we’ve not been able to beat them in six years, said Coach Skyles. All three of the underclass foot- ball teams showed why they de- served to wear the red, silver, and black of Alta High School. The ju- nior varsity team won twice as many games as in previous years, despite the loss of players to varsity. The sophomores took region play which surprised critics, and the freshmen finished with a respectable record which will get better with exper- ience. Promising Season Sours The Hawks needed to win again at Davis in the first round of the state playoffs to keep their season going. The Darts proved to be much more of a challenge than the Miners. In the first half, Davis took advan- tage of an interception and a pair of penalties against Alta to go ahead 7-0. The Darts scored again early in the second half on a 40-yard TD run but the point after try was blocked by Kelly Jensen and the Darts were up 13-0. The Hawks put together a scoring drive in mid- third quarter capped off by a 14-yard TD run by Deno Fabrizio, but it was too little too late as the Darts went on to win the game 13-7. Alta’s loss cost them a trip to Rice Stadium and a shot at another championship tro- phy. Co-captain Darin Knowles felt that this year’s team was Alta’s most talented ever, and that they should have been able to repeat the championship. “The team’s strong points were their incredible defense and running game.” stated Darin. The team’s major faults included penalties, and ‘stupid, stupid, stu- pid. stupid’ mental mistakes.” Fighting for every inch . Trent Ogden is dragged to the ground by a Mountain View linebacker.
