No one tries to be the hero of the game by trying to score a difficult shot when someone else is open. We all feel like heroes when we win together.” says Laura Sterling. “We support each other a lot,” Daniella Rindels exclaims. “In games, if we mess up we help each other by not putting each other down. A game isn’t worth a good friendship. Friendships are another factor for the success of the team. By partici- pating in activities outside of prac- tices and games, the girls are able to build up good concrete relation- ships. “When we fight with each other, we can’t possibly do our best in working together,” remarks Shaunel Fisher. “That really can have bad effects on our games.” “We’re all friends.” continues Laura Sterling. “How can we not be when we spend so much time and effort play together?” The girls are able to relieve tension by not taking the games too seriously, yet main- tain a good discipline. The girls practice for many hours, not men- tioning the two hours of sweaty bas- ketball games. “Our practices are really in- tense,” quotes Wendy Horlacher.

Unusual Diet: NO RICE The Hawks suffered their worst state finish in years, losing to Davis in the first round of the playoffs. Through the first four games of the season, the team was ranked num- ber one in the 4A State Coaches’ Poll, and it appeared they again would be state bound. After pounding 3A Jordan 34-13 in the preseason, Alta faced West Jordan in their first regular season game. The Hawks held a 21-2 lead going into halftime, and they held on to that lead to win by a stunning 50 to 9 blowout. The Hawks made quick work of the Mountain View Bruins winning 20-14, but they had to fight a hostile Orem crowd the next week to pull off a 21-14 victory in the final minutes of the game. Coming into the homecoming game against the number-two ranked Brighton Bengals, tension was high. Though the Hawks were This Year plagued by penalties, they played strong defense and managed to stay close throughout the entire game. Behind 17 to 14, the team had a chance to tie by a field goal with less than two minutes remain- ing in the game. Kicking against the wind, the ball sailed just left of the uprights, and Brighton fell on the ball to win by a mere three points. After this depressing loss the Hawks were still in strong conten- tion for the playoffs riding a 5-1 re- cord into the final stretch of the sea- son, but the team dampened their state chances by losing two close games to Hillcrest and American Fork, i he Hawks were torcea into a Alta's leading rusher. Defensively, they played their best game of the season, hold- ing the Miners to only 39 yards, and they registered seven sacks, four of which were made by Brett Radcliffe. Penalties were also cut down to only four, for a thirty yard total. Offen- sively, Trent Ogden was the only one of either team to get into the endzone on a two yard ramble. Jeff Grey kicked two Hawk field goals for 25 and 30 yards. Alta’s impres- sive playing won the game 13-2 and the regular season ended with a credible 5-3 record and number three ranking in Region 2.
