Tennis Players DEVASTATE Beginning with tryouts the week before school started and matches the first week of school, the girls’ tennis team got off to a busy start. Matches were held twice a week, many times in the wind and the rain. During the season, Alta was victori- ous over all other teams, with the exception of Brighton. The region tournament held at Mountain View proved to be very successful as the girls placed sec- ond overall. The girls played long hours. Burning holes through the soles of their shoes and gulping wa- ter out of tennis cans were common sights. Stephanie Ball placed sec- ond in 1st singles, Debbie Nordberg Choosing the best balls. State was held at Liberty Park. The team placed fifth overall while Kristen Rich and Jenny Wood made it to the semi-finals. When asked about the best part of being on the tennis team, Jenny wood replied, “The best part was when Quimby bribed us with free dinners if we won the quarter fin- als. Relaxing after placing 5th overall in state, the varsity team demonstrates the friendships they have with each other. Examining the ball for defects, Mandy Ri- deout prepares to serve.

No one tries to be the hero of the game by trying to score a difficult shot when someone else is open. We all feel like heroes when we win together.” says Laura Sterling. “We support each other a lot,” Daniella Rindels exclaims. “In games, if we mess up we help each other by not putting each other down. A game isn’t worth a good friendship. Friendships are another factor for the success of the team. By partici- pating in activities outside of prac- tices and games, the girls are able to build up good concrete relation- ships. “When we fight with each other, we can’t possibly do our best in working together,” remarks Shaunel Fisher. “That really can have bad effects on our games.” “We’re all friends.” continues Laura Sterling. “How can we not be when we spend so much time and effort play together?” The girls are able to relieve tension by not taking the games too seriously, yet main- tain a good discipline. The girls practice for many hours, not men- tioning the two hours of sweaty bas- ketball games. “Our practices are really in- tense,” quotes Wendy Horlacher.
