The team was especially strong in the preseason by defeating Cottonwood 12-3 and crushing Davis 13-3. In the Davis game, catcher third baseman Kevin Bouwman smashed two grand-slam ho- meruns to spark the Hawks to victory. The highlight of the season was the team's trip to Las Vegas. For three days the Hawks played against the best teams in the West. The Hawks played four com- petitive games showing the quality of Utah baseball. Coach Gary Garcia felt that if the team as a whole stayed healthy, especially the crucial pitchers, the Hawks would have a successful season and make their pres- ence shown in the post-season tourna- ment.
