Three Is As the basketball season pro- gressed. cries of “Go Alta Take State” diminished to just “Go Alta, beat the Miners.” The Hawks suf- fered another long and disappoint- ing season this year winning only two regular season games against Orem and Mountain View, and one preseason game against Skyview. The team’s strong points included speed and a good defense. Be- cause of their lack of bulk, they were able to move the ball up and down the court much quicker, and excelled in getting fast breaks. Their defense was outstanding as their speed enabled them to pick off passes and play a variety of differ- ent defensive set-ups. “Our speed and endurance were strong,” said Shawn Lindquist. “We could run a BETTER Than None good full-court press and forced several turnovers per game.” Another asset to their season was their excellent coaching. Coach Long and his staff worked hard to keep spirits high and encourage the team to victory. “Coach Long is one of the best coaches in the state.” remarked Wayne Chappell. “He has had many years of experience in basketball and knows the game like the back of his hand. He never gives up.” The team’s predominant weak- ness was their lack of self-confi- dence. “It’s hard to work as a team when you have a losing record,” stated Cricker Hallsey. It was diffi- cult to convince ourselves that we had the talent to beat anybody.” Although the season was a long one and the constant losses be- came almost monontonous. Alta’s fans poured into the games to cheer, shout at the other team, and harass the referees. Many players noticed that the noise level never decreased as the season went on and were impressed with the sup- port they received at road games. “Alta’s fans are the greatest,” Ja- red Larsen observed, “wherever we go to play, we have a large following no matter what our record is.” VARSITY BASKETBALL: Kelly Jenson. Squads Gain EXPERIENCE While the freshman, sophomore, and junior varsity basketball teams don’t get the same attention and support as the varsity team, they work just as hard to earn a respectable record. The freshman team had a disappoint- ing year. Chris Salisbury said even though their record wasn’t the best they learned a lot throughout the year. “Our coaches helped us learn to play as a team. They were very patient with us and taught us a lot.” The sophomore team finished the year with a 4 and 10 record. Coach Dustin attributes their success to the dedication of the players. The kids work really hard and do what they are On the road. Cricker Hallsey shows grace under pressure. asked. They stay organized both during the games and during practices, so they are ready to learn.’’ On the verge of playing varsity ball, junior varsity members play under extra pressure to succeed. Their 3 and 11 record doesn’t accurately represent their skill. According to Coach Black they are a talented team who never give up. “They work extremely hard together knowing that when they win. they win as a team. In spite of their record, they never stopped trying. Members of all three of these under- rated teams played well in a difficult year with one objective in mind: to make the varsity team.
